WATCH-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 23, 1919- Application filed March 19, 1918. Serial No. 223,353.
To all whom z't may concern Be it known that I, OoTAvE J. Sr. PIERRE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Chauvin, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Can-ada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Watch-Holders, of which the following is This invention is an improvement in article holders and has particular reference to that type of holder designed for attachment to wearing apparel and for receiving a watch therein.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved holder or receptacle of simple and inexpensive construction which, when secured in a pocket, will effectively protect a watch and particularly the crystal thereof against brea age due to lateral pressure, revent accidental slipping of the watch rom the holder which might otherwise occur when the wearer bends or stoops, and which will retain the watch therein in such manner as to prevent extraction thereof by a person other than the wearer without giving warning to the latter.
Briefly stated, the holder consists of a body adapted to be secured in a pocket of a garment and provided with an opening for receiving the watch which is normally. closed by a flexible covering or closure having its outer edge secured to the body adjacent the opening therein and also havinga central opening through which the watch 1s inserted into and extracted from the body. The opening in said covering is normally maintained in a restricted condition by binding the edge thereof with a flexible member which will permit of an expansion of the opening when the watch is inserted and withdrawn and which will immediately contract the material of the covering to reduce the opening to its normal size after the watch has passed therethrough.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical ex ressions, one of which for the purpose of i lustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view of the holder showing the same in position in a pocket of a garment, the pocket being partly broken away.
Fig. Q is a central vertical section through the holder and pocket:
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the holder.
The invention is illustrated in what is i now considered a preferred form and com-V promises a body 5 made of sufficient size to receive a watch therein and rounded at one end, as indicated at 6, to conform to the shape. of the watch, the other end 7 of the body being opened. Any desired material may be used in making the body 5 but it is preferable that the same be relatively stiff or rigid in order to protect the watch as much as possibleagainstblows or lateral pressure from without. The interior of the body is provided with a lining or padding 8 of chamois, felt or other like material, which not only forms a further protection from exterior pressure but also prevents scratching of the Watch case.
In order to secure the body 5 within the pocket so -that the open end 7 thereof will remain uppermost and thus retain the watch in proper position, one side of said body preferably has extending therefrom a screw threaded shank or stud 9 which is forced or punched through the cloth of the pocket so that the exterior end thereof may receive thereon the interiorly threaded stem 10 of a locking head or button 11. By screwing this head 11 tightly upon the shank 9,
`it will be obvious that the material of the outer portion of the pocket will be securely clamped between the adjacent side of the body 5 and -said head and thus fasten and retain the body in its proper position to per- -mit of a watch being inserted thereinto.
The invention further contemplates the provision of novel means for retaining the watch within the body and preventing accidental displacement or theft thereof and, to this end, use is preferably made of a covering or closure 12 for the open end 7 of the body which covering is made of some flexible material and hals its fouter edge stitched or otherwise secured to the body 5 surrounding the opening therein. The covering 12 may be formed from a single length of relatively narrow material and by providing the same with a plurality of transverse folds or gathers 13, the inner edge thereof is made to form a central opening 14 through which the watch is inserted into the body and extracted therefrom. It is further proposed to normally restrict the size of the opening 14 so that the material forming the edge thereof will be gathered about the stem of the watch with the remainder thereof inclosed within the body by the covering. For this purpose, the covering has secured thereto at its inner edge as -by stitching, an elastic band 15 Which surrounds the opening 14 and normally maintains the same in its restricted state but, a-t the same time, permits of an expansionorvenlargement of the opening vvitlil a consequent spreading of the folds or gathers 13 When a Watch is inserted into or Withdrawn from thebody. After such an operation, it will be apparent that, due to the elasticity ofthe band 15, the same Will immediately contract and thus decrease the size of the opening 14 to its normal or minimum condition.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanyingA drawing,
f it will be seen that the holder provides an effective protection for a Watch placed therein and that, by reason of the covering 12 and band 15, accidental displacement of the Watch will be avoided should the lwearer bend over or stoop, and, further, that a consideraloly greater pull than is ordinarily necessary will have to be exerted upon the ceive a Watch therein and being open at its i? upper end, a liningof soft material for said casing and closely fitting .the latter, a threaded stem on the exterior of said body adapted to bel extended through the garment,
a nut to lbe secured upon the said stem, a i
cover for the said body formed of flexible material cfa size substantially equal to the said open end and secured to the body at the open end thereof and having` a central opening, and a contractile member on said cover f surrounding the said opening whereby the latter Will be normally and .yieldably held closed.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
