Be it known that I, OTHO M. O'I'rE, a citizen of the United States, residing at '91 East Newton avenue, in the city of Jamestown, New York, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealed Containers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification. I
The invention relates to sealed containers for perishable or easily impaired articles; and the invention consists in providing a combined expendible or reusable hermetically sealed container which is so economically constructed that it may be used once and thrown away or may be reused as stated; and the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as shown in this application and the accompanying drawings and pointed out in claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the lid or cover for the container. Fig. 2 is a" perspective view of the top of the container, the corner being broken away to show the construction and arrange; ment of the sealing groove within and around the inner wall of the top of the container. Fig. 3 is a sectional view at line 3-3 in Fig. 1 showing the lid or cover in position within the sealing groove and the spirally ended cam leversin the non-seallng position, the sealing position belng shown in dotted outline. Fig. 4 is'a sectional view at line 4.4l in Fig. 3 showing an end view of the spiral cam shaped end' of the sealing and locking lever in the sealing positlon; and 5 is a sectional view of the upper corner at line 3-3 in Fig; 1 showing said cam ended spiral in thelocking position. 'F'lg. 6 is a sectionalperspective view of a modification of the sealed container showing a ace straight sealing edge on the cover in p of the grooved edge shown in Figs. 1-5 and a cam shaped downwardly bracing turn on each of the ends ofthe sealing lever in place of the cam ended spiral, that is, it is substantially the spiral locking end cut short, said lever being shown 'in'the unlocked position adjacent the section; and Fi 7 is a similar section of the corner with the lever end in the locking and sealing position.
Fig.8 is a side elevation of the container the U-shaped locking levers turned showin 51y over the ends of thecontainer as outwar clips-19 at each side. The clips 19 not only when used in withdrawing the cover from the sealing position.
Like characters of reference refer to corresponding partsin the several views.
The numeral 10'desig'nates the container which is'here shown box shaped for perishableor easily impaired articles, as for eX- ample, ammunition, thefbox beingshown with a' holder supportll at one end and an inturned return bend flange 12, from which the metal sheet extends downward in a hook shaped portion 13 within and-against the inner wall of the box 10 to form' a groove 14 for containing a sealing compound 15 as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 6 and The compound 15 may be made of para'ffin, wax, wax tailings, asphaltum or other compositions having a seallng and solidifying action, though where the container 10 may be placed in a stationary level position, the groove 14 may be filled with mercury thereby providing an all-metal container and sealing element.
A cover 16 is provided having a downwardly inclined flanged edge which for the spiral cam ended form of lock has the upturned or grooved edge. 17 extending around the same and fitting within the hook shaped grooved portion 13 and 1 1 so that it can be pressed into the sealing compound 15 and preferably 'fits tight against theinner wall of said groove 1%; as shown in the different sectional viewsfl In order to press the edge 17 firmly against the inner wall of the groove 14 and hold the cover 16 down'into the sealing compound 15, a plurality of levers 18 are provided which are U-shaped and pivotally attached tothe top of the cover 16 by means of spot'welded permit arotative action, but also a spread ing and" sliding movement to or f'rom the inner wall of the container 10. The opposite ends of each lever 18 are providedw-ith a cam shaped spiral 20 which fits between the grooved edge 17 of the cover or lid 16 and the "under side of the inturned flange-12 when said spiral end 20 is turned down into its cam binding interlock. The end 20' is preferably made spiral, turning from the axis of' the shaft of the wire to one side, to thereby give a cam shaped downward thrust in 'groove1'7 when the lever 18 is, turned from the nonlocking position to the locking position. It

of the arms of the lever 18 is pressed down the inclined cover side above the groove 17 by the turning of the lever 18' from the non-locking position to the locking, the spiral 20 will be pressed endwise at each side thereby spreading the arms and engaging beneath the inward return bend flange 12 at each container side, drawing sidewise sufficiently through the clips 19 at each side to resiliently hold said spirals 20 between the inturned flanges 12 and the groove 17 by pressing into the corner formed by the flange 12 at each side, and consequently pressing the adjacent walls of the groove 17 and groove 13 firmly against one another, pressing out any of the compound 15 that may be between said walls, said compound hermetically sealing the firmly held joint between the two parts.
The modification shown in Figs. 6 and 7, shows a modified form of the spiral 20 into an angularly turned end 21 of the lever 22, which lever is formed U-shaped and pivotally held in form by the clips 19 the same as levers 18. The flanged edge 24 of the cover 25 is not turned in a groove as shown at 17, but is left sharp to cut through the compound 15. This permits the use of different compound compositions from the construction shown in Figs. 1-5. It is not so essen tial either that the upper edge of the container 10 be turned in a right angle flange so as to provide the strong holding corner, it only being necessary to provide a shoulder 26 against which the bend 27 in the end of the lever 22 bears, so that as the double ended U-shaped lever 22 is turned into the locking position as shown in Fig. 7 from the unlocked position, the locking ends 21 will be turned toward the shoulders 26 by the slight inward curve of said locking end as it presses against the downwardly inclined side of the flange 24:. In this form also the groove 13 may be made larger and angular, since it is not essential that it fits so closely the flanged side 24 as is the case in the flanged side 17.
The levers 18 and 22 are preferably placed near the ends of the container 10 so as to obtain a leverage over the raised end of the container for withdrawing the lid or cover,
16 or 25 from the compound 15 when it is desired to open the container, it only being necessary to press downward upon the outwardly turned ends of the levers, moving them from the position shown in Fig. 8 in solid line to the position shown in dotted.- line.
The handles 23 shown in Fig. 6 provide a simple and convenient carrying means for the container 10, and also means for assisting in withdrawing the cover 16 or 25 from the sealed attachment.
I claim as new:
1. A sealed container comprising a receptacle having a groove around the mouth of the same, a sealing element in said groove, a cover having an angular flange shaped to enter said groove and said sealing element around said mouth, and a spiral cam ended lever pivotally attached to said cover to move said spiral cam end into locking engagement with said container and cover flange.
2. A sealed container comprising a sheet metal receptacle, the edge portion of the sheet metal around the mouth of said receptacle turned inward in a roll or flange to form a shoulder, said edge portion given a return bend to form a groove around the mouth of the receptacle, a cover having a downwardly flanged edge fitting within said return bend groove, a U-shaped lever hinged to the top of said cover to turn back and forth thereon, sidewise extending cam shaped ends on said lever at each side to fit within and between said groove and said shoulder to hold said cover on said receptacle by turning said U-shaped lever from the open to the closed position, and a sealing element in said groove.
3. A sealed container comprising a sheet metal receptacle, the edge of the sheet metal around the mouth of said receptacle inturned in a raised roll or flange to form a shoulder,
said edge portion given a return bend to form a groove around and within the mouth of said receptacle, a cover having a downwardly flanged edge with a return bend therein to form a groove fitting within said return bend groove in the edge of said receptacle, the top of said cover normally on a plane below the level of said roll or flanged edge of said receptacle, a U-shaped resilient lever hinged to the top of said cover near each end ofthe same to turn back and forth thereon and attain a withdrawing leverage for said cover from said sealing element over the raised edge of said roll or flanged edge, spiral sidewise extending cam shaped ends on said lever at each side to fit within and between the grooved edge of said cover and said shoulder onsaid receptacle to hold said cover in looking engagement, and a sealing element in said groove.
4. In a container, a receptacle having a groove around its mouth and an abutment overhanging the groove, a cover having a resilient depending flange engaging in the groove, and means engageable with the abutment and the resilient flange to force the latter into sealed relation to the groove.
5. In a container, a receptacle having a groove around its mouth, a cover having a resilient flange depending therefrom "and engaged in the groove, and means to force the resilient flange into sealed relation to the groove by moving the flange relative to the cover.
6, Ina container, a receptacle having a groove around its mouth and an abutment overhanging the groove, a cover having a resilient depending flange engaging in the groove and means to force the flange into sealed relation to the groove including a camlike member extending alongside of the flange and engaged therewith and with the abutment.
7. In a container a receptacle having a groove around its mouth and an abutment overhanging the groove, a cover having a resilient depending flange engaging in the groove, and means to force the flange into sealed relation to the groove including a turnable member having an angular part at one end interposed between the abutment and a flange whereby to force the flange against the groove wall upon turning of the member.
8. In a container, a receptacle, a cover thereon, said cover and receptacle having interengaged parts extending at an angle thereto and one of the parts being resilient and means to force the resilient part laterally and into engagement with the other part so as to effect a sealing relationship between said parts.
9. In a container a receptacle having a groove around its mouth and an abutment overhanging the groove, a cover having a flange depending therefrom and disposed in the groove, and means engageable with the flange and abutment to lock the flange in the groove.
10. In a container, a receptacle having a groove around its mouth and an abutment overhanging the groove, a cover having a flange depending therefrom and disposed in the groove, and means tolock the flange in the groove including a turnable element which upon movement in one direction enters the groove and engages the abutment and flange and upon different movement 15 'moved out of the groove.
11. In a container, a receptacle havlng a" groove, a cover having a resilient flange extending laterally thereof and into the groove, and means to force the flange laterally of the cover and into sealing engagement with the groove including a turnable member and a cam-like part on said member extending at substantially right angles thereto and engaged with a side of the flange.
13. In a container, a receptacle having a groove formed with an abutment of substantially right-angle cross-section, a cover having a depending flange in the groove disposed opposite to the abutment and means engaged in the angle of the abutment and with the flange to force the latter into sealing engagement with the groove.
14. In a container, a receptacle having a groove, a cover having a depending flange engaged in said groove and means to exert pressure on the flange to move the flange relative to the cover to thereby force the flange into sealing engagement with a part of the bottom wall of the groove.
