(Cl. 220-55) This invention relates to drums, kegs and like hollow-ware and especially to the method of securing lids or covers thereon and has for its chief object 'to provide a new or improved or over the drum.
In another aspect of the invention it resides in a method of securing a lid or cover to'a drum, keg or like hollow-ware by means of a fastening device adaptedto engage both .the depending flange of the lid and the neck and/or body of the drum or keg in such a manner as to draw down the lid and" secure it firmly in position on the drum as the fastening device'is moved to its closed or locked position by cam, lever, toggle or turnbuckle like action so that in such position the fastening'device is situated close to or within the depending flange of the lid or with the outer diameter of the drum or keg.
.More specifically the fastening device comprises a lever, cam, toggle or turnbuckle having one part attached to the lid and another part engaging a projection on the keg or drum or vice versa, 50 that, on'the closing action of the fastening device; .said other part engages the' projection/draws down the lid to secure it firmly in position, on or'over the drum and the fastening device when in the closed or locked position is substantially flush with the depending flange on the lid or substantially flush with the outer diameter of the drum.
The lid and fastening means are equally applicable to all types ofkegs or drums. In one form of the invention the fastening means will be accommodated. in a space formed between thedepending flange of the lid and the diameter of the drum which it encloses or covers. other forms the fastening means will beaccommodated in a recess formed in the drum either by ofl setting a part ,of the drum or forming a circular bulge on the drum. In all forms the generalyconstruction is such that the lid-and its fastening means are situated close to or within the outer diameter of the drum. When the top of a keg ,or drum isprovided with a rolled over edge or bead the' fastening device may "engage the underside offthe bead and alsojengage a similar rollecl over edge or bead on the flange of the lid.
In order that the invention may be clearly understoodand readily carried into effect, the same will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate various types of drum with the appropriate fastening devices applied.
Figures 1 and 2 show two slightly different types of lid and drum or keg with the lid having a depending flange fitting around the neck which in Figure 1 is of less'diameter than the body and in Figure 2 the bod is formed with an outstanding rim, collar or bulge. In each case a recess or space is formed to accommodate the fastening device.
Figures 3 and 4 show one form of fastening device comprising wire-in the form of a catch lever having a camming part which acts as a toggle.-
Figures 5 and 6 show similar types of drum and lid to Figures 1 and 2.
Figures 7 and 8 show two other constructions of a catcher lever.
Figures 9 and 10 show slightly different types of drum with recessed neck and slotted lid flange for accommodating the fastening device.
Figures 11, Hand .13 show fastening devices in the form of toggle levers.
Figures 14, 15 and 16 show a slightly different type of drum from that shown in Figures 1 and .2 wherein a separate band is provided on the neck which may be formed to carry a handle.
Figures 17, 18 and19show various forms of fastening meansfappli'ed to slightly differently shaped drums.
Figures 20 and 21 show forms of cam shaped turnbuckle fastening means, Figure 22 also showing a further type of drum and lid with inclined neck and lid flange.
Referring to. the drawings. 5 represents the drum or keg, 2 the lid and 3 a sealing disc or packing ring between the lid and top of the drum. The lid has a. depending flange t and is usually formed with a rolled over edge or bead 5' as is also the top of the drum formed with a similar rolled over edge or bead 6.- In Figures 1 :and I 2 the drum is provided with a space or recessed portion 1 and the depending flange :4 has an aperture or slot 8 adjacent'therecessed' portion 1. In this case the drumiihas a shoulder. or circumferential rim or bulge 9 adjacent to the bead 5. The fastening means in this instance comprises a latch, hasp or catch I, cast or fabricated from wire, stock metal, or plastic material with legs Ii pivotally mounted in a hinge piece l2 secured to the lid and having a cam shaped portion l3. When the hasp or catch is moved to the latched or locked position the cam portion engages the shoulder or recessed portion 1 and as it is pivot ally mounted on the lid it draws down the lid to secure it firml in position over. the drum When the latch passes through the slot or aperture 8 and enters the recessed portion 7. It will thus be seen that when the lid is in closed position the fastening device is enclosed by or substantially flush with the depending flange of the lid. The aperture 8 permits the fastening means to be readily operated and released.
Figures and 6 show similar types of lid and drum to Figures 1 and 2 except that the depending flange a in this case does not extend below or in front of the recessed portion 1. In this instance a slightly difierent form of hasp or catch can be employed as shown in Figures 7 and 8 which is also made from wire stock or other suitable material and having a leg M pivotally mounted to the hinge piece 12 and having a cam portion i3 adapted to engage the shoulder or recessed portion 1 in a similar manner to the device shown and described in Figures 3 and i. The free end of the hasp or catch may be sprung under the bead 5 of the lid 4 which retains it in position.
In the construction in Figures 9, and 11 the depending flange of the lid is spaced from the drum and is provided with an aperture or slot I 5 adapted to receive the fastening device 16, see Figure 11, which may be of the form shown in Figure 11 having a lever I"! pivoted to the rolled over edge or bead 5 of the lid. Pivotally mounted on the other or free end of the lever I1 is a toggle link or lever I8 whose end I8 is shaped to engage the bead 6 of the drum. When the link I8 is pressed with its end l8 in abutting en agement with the edge 6 the lever l1 draws down the lid to secure it to the drum and the two links H and 18 enter the slot l5 and are accommodated in the space between the drum and the lid flange, the fastening device passing over centre when the lid is in the secured position.
In Figure 14, the drum is of the type having a circular rim or bulge 20 formed in the body or in a separate band 19 secured to the neck as shown in Figures and 16 wherein the band is adapted to receive a carrying handle 2 I, and such drums are adaptable to the turnbuckle type of fastening shown in Figures 16-19. In Figures 12 and 13 the drum and lid are similar to those shown in Figures 9 and 10 except that the depending flange is not provided with a slot. In Figure 12 the fastening device comprises a toggle mechanism having a rod or link 22 pivoted on a bracket 23 flxed to the drum and a cam shaped lever 24 pivotally mounted to the free end of the link 22, said cam having a projection or hook 25 adapted to snap over the sealing flange 25 of the lid. It will be understood that as the fastening device is brought to closed position the cam lever 24 presses down on the bead 5 of the lid and draws the same down into tight engagement with the drum.
The fastening device shown in Figure 13 operates in a similar manner to that of Figure 12. In this instance however the link 22 is pivotally mounted on a bracket 26 on the depending flange of the lid, and the cam lever 24 engages an outstanding part 21 on the drum. As the cam lever is pressed towards the drum the lid is drawn into tight engagement with the drum as the point 24 bears against the part 21.
Figures 1'7, 18 and 19 show different forms of turnbuckle fastening devices. In Figure 17 there is a lug or band secured or formed on the body of thedrum and a strap 29 secured to the lid. Through the strap passes a bolt 30 having a nut which when rotated draws down the lid into tight engagement with the body of the drum. In Figure 18, bolt 30 passes through a strap 29 and has a head 33 for the reception of a turning key 4|. In Figure 19 there is provided a ramped hinge 32 against which the ramped head cap 33 abuts and which when turned draws the lid down into tight engagement with the drum, as the lug or lever 3| abuts against the upper side of the recess 1. The bolt or rod 30 may be provided with any kind of head adapted to engage either the lid or the body.
In Figures 20 and 21 circular turnbuckles are provided adapted to engage projections on the lid and body of the drum. In this construction there is a disc 42 carrying a stud 43 on the lid flange and a disc 34 carrying a stud 45 on the drum. To draw the lid down on to the drum a cam shaped ring or key 45 is provided having notches l? spaced further apart than the distance between the studs 43 and 45. The key or ring 46 is first placed with its notches llover the studs then turned clockwise or counter-clock: wise with the result that its cam shaped inner surface draws the discs towards each other and draws the lid down into tight engagement with the drum. In Figure 22 which shows a modified form of lid and drum, a cam 39 is disposed between the lid flange and the drum and bears against the rolled over edge or bead on the drum as the head cap 40 is rotated to draw the lid down on to the drum. 7

If desired a plurality of the fastening devices may be diametrically disposed or spaced around the drum or depending lid flange and these may be mounted to either the lid flange or to the body of the drum according to requirements and particular type of drum to which they are attached and adapted when the lid is placed on the drum or keg to engage either the body of the drum or the lid flange according to their mountmg.
Although certain types of fastening devices have been shown as applied toa particular type of drum it will be appreciated that some of the devices are also applicable to drums other than the particular type to which they are shown as applied; For example, the toggle type of fastening device shown in Figures 11, 12 and 13 can readily be applied to the type of drum shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 14 and 15, and the turnbuckle type of fastening device shown in Figures 17, 18 and 19 can be applied to the type of drum shown in the aforesaid figures.
The devices shown in Figures 3, 4, '7 and 8 are particularly adapted for passing a wire or string round the neck of the body and through the loops of the sealing devices so as to render the drum more secure against pilferage.
I claim:
1. In a stackable drum having a lid and closure means, the combination therewith of a permanently attached fastening device, said lid having a peripheral flange and a sealing recess, and a depending flange on the lid extending below the peripheral flange and sealing recess, and fitting around the outer side of the neck of the drum,
said fastening device comprising a latch of one piece wire stock having a vertical leg pivotally mounted in a hinge piece securedto the depending flange of the lid and having a cam-shaped por- 5 tion adapted to engage the upper wall of an annular recess in the side of the drum so as to draw down the lid and secure it firmly over the drum, said depending flange overlapping the annular recess so as to conceal the same and having a slot therein through which the cam portion projects to engage said shoulder.
2. In a stackable drum having a lid and closure means, the combination therewith of a permanently attached fastening device, said lid having a peripheral flange and a sealing recess, and a depending flange on the lid extending below the peripheral flange and sealing recess, and fitting around the outer side of the neck of the drum, said fastening device comprising a hasp of one piece wire stock and having vertically disposed spaced legs pivotally mounted in a hinge piece secured to the lid, and having a cam shaped portion adapted to engage a shoulder in the drum so as to draw down the lid and secure it firmly in position over the drum, said depending flange having a slot adapted to receive the hasp when in latched position within a recess within the drum, said depending flange overlapping and concealing said. shoulder when the parts are assembled.
