YIMPROVEMENT IN CNS FCR PAINT, 8st.`
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,347, dated April 28, 1874; 'application filed April I6, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Y Be it known that I, CHARLES MOSER, of Gincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented an Improved Can or Receptacle for Iaint and other articles, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to a cylindrical can or box which is hermetically closed by simultaneously swaging the rim of the said can or box a-nd the upturned lip of the cover, so as to inI- part to the same the foiin of a' scrcw, and "tu at the same time enclose two gaskets, of which one is of tin or other soft metal, and the other By this means the contents 'of the can are hermetieally sealed, so as vto be-capab'le of being kept for. any length 0t' time, or ,transported from place'to place, without Ainjury to athe contents, to which, however, access can be had at any moment by simply u nscrewing the cover, an action which is rendered easy by the provision ofan eye or socket on the top oi' the cover lwhich is adapted to receive a nail or other like-instrument for that purpose.
If only a portion of the contents is required,
the can may be closed upv again as completely.
as before.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View, representing the members ot' my improved can detached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the upper part of the can, showing the cover in position, and before the swaging ofthe groove. Fig. 3 is asimilar section after the groove has been turned.' Fig. 4. is an enlarged view of the same.
A represents a cylindrical vessel whose month or opening is equal, or nearly so, to the diameter of the Cylinder. The sides of thisv vessel a little belowT the open margin are spun inward and again outward and upward, so as to present a shoulder, B, and an upturned rim, C. The' lid or cover D is upturned exteriorly, so as to present a iiange, E, which is of such dimensions, relatively, to the vessel as to pen mit the insertion ot' a paper gasket, F, below, and of atin or other soft-metal gasket, G, above, which., having been inserted, the rim C and AIiange E,-tegether withthe soft-metal gasket G, are tightly and hermetically pressed or swaged together, so as to present the helicalthreaded appearance shown at c e, Figs. 3 and 4. The central portion of the cover is formed crowning, and has (soldered or otherwise) firmly attached to it an eye or socket, H, for the insertion of any suitable wrench or lever CHARLES MOSER.
