Description
PATENTED JULY 30, 1907.
F. G. GULLEN.
GOMPARTMENT CAN.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 23, 1905.
UNITED; STATES FRANK O. CULLEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
I COMPABTMENT-CAN,
To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, FRANK O. CULLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compartment-Cans, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to improvements in eom'partment cans and it has for its object to provide a can especially suitable for use in packaging the ingredients composing metal powder paints; the idea being to provide arnain compartment within which the liquid vehicle is scaled and a detachable closed compartment within which themetal powderis' stored until wanted for use.
Incidental objects of the invention are to provide a device which can be very economically manufactured by the use of ordinary can making machinery; to provide a device in which the detachable powder compart ment may be removed with great facility butis nevertheless united to the main can with suflicient reliability to form a unit package for all purposes of shipment andhandling; to provide a construction in which access can be had readily to both the liquid compartment and the powder compartment, and in general to provide an improved device of the character referred tol To the above ends the invention consists in' the mat-- ters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description, reference being had to the ac-- companying drawing, which is a central vertical section of a can constituting a preferred embodiment of the invention.
1 designates as a whole a can body which, so far as the present invention is concerned, may be constructed in any suitable manner as to its upper end in order to afford ready access to the contents thereof., As illustrated, the top is formed by means of a cap member 2, interfoldedat its margin with the upper edge of the can body, as indicated at 3, and provided with a relatively large central aperture 4 surrounded. by a downturned flange 5, and within which aperture is seated a drawn metal cylindric cap 6, provided with an out-turned marginal flange or roll, 7 1
The lower end of thecan body 1 is closed by means of a bottom cap 8 having its margin interfolded with the Specification 01 Letters. Patent. Application filed June 23, 1905. Serial No. 266,568.
Patented July so, 1907.
end margin of the can body, as indicated at 9. The detachable member 10, is in this instance adapted to be connected with the lower end of the main can by means of a bayonet joint. Tothis end, circumferentially extending slots llare formed at opposite points in the downturned flange 8 of the dividing plate or false bottom 8; each of these slots terminating at one end in an inlet slot 11 forming an entrance to the main portion of the slot. The lower member 10 is provided at its upper edge with a pair of diametrically opposite laterally projecting studs-12, which are adapted to pass into and engage the bayonet'slots of the upper member in a well understood manner.
Preferably a bead 13 is formed to extend circumferentially around the lower member 10 so as to simulate the appearance of a double bead when the two partsoi the can are united.
The lower end of the detachable compartment member 10 is formed as an ordinary head, the edge of which is interfolded with the lower edge of said detachable member. I
-It will be noted that the detachable smaller compartment 10 forms in effect an exterision of the main body of the can externally uniform with the same, so that the can presents the appearance of a unit when the parts are assembled. The lower end of the main can-body forms the cover of the detachable member, so that when the parts are assembled a closed compartment is formed.
I claim as my invention:
A compartment can, comprising'a main can body having cylindric Sides, a bottom closure inserted within the lower end orthe can body and having its margin interfoided with the end margin of the can body whereby a downwardiy projected fiangels formed, having a bead-like thickening upon its interior,v a bayonet groove formed interiorly within said flange and between thc'latter and said bottom end wall, an inlet groove formed across said head like thickening and leading into said bayonet groove, and a cup like detachable compartmentmember having cyiindric sides conforming to the exterior of the can body sides and provided at its upper end with a reduced rim portion adapted to fit within the flange extension of the can body and with said bayonet groove.
FRANK C. CULLEN.
