Application iilefl July 20,
To all whom it may concern le it known that CLARENCE L. Hai-in, a citizen of the United States,` residing at Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore City and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Boil-Openers, oi" which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in openers for boXes or containers and h as for an object the provision of means carried by the container, whereby the coveil may be easily and quickly removed.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which may be applied to containers now in use, without employing rivets or the like as a securing means, so that leakage of the contents of the con tainer is avoided.
Another object is the provision of an opener which does not extend beyond the edges of the container and which will therefore not interfere with proper and compact packing. n
O'her objects and advantages of the inf vention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
ln the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation view of a container with the invention applied, the container being shown in closed position.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section of the saine.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the lid or cover raised.
Fig. l is a detailed perspective view of the opener removed from the container.
Figs. 5 and 6 are similar views of modified forms of the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown as applied to the top of a tin boi; or container usually employed for holding shoe dressing. The container is indicated by the reference characterI 10 and is of circular formation, being provided with an annular bead 11 which is spaced from the top edge of the container, the said bead being shown formed by crimping so as to ext-end laterally around the outer edge of the container. This bead forms a shoulder stop for a removable lid or cover 12, the latter being provided with a flange 13 for engagement with the bead.
The cover 12 is constructed so as to snugly Specification of Letters lateiit.

lit over the container and extends over the side wall oi the latter for an appreciable distance, so as to provide a substantially airtight receptacle,` the purpose being to keep the contents of the container in proper position for use. lt is therefore, diflicult to remove the cover without the aid of some tool o1' device for insertion between the edge of the cover flange and the bead 11 and for this purpose there is provided a substantially E shaped nieta-l slide 14. This slide is formed of flat metal and is provided at one end with .an inturned lip 15 which, when the cover is in position upon the container occupies a position between the bead and the cover flange. The opposite end of the slide is provided with an outwardly extending lip l@ which provides a finger piece for manipulating the slide. The length of the slide is such that when in its lowerinost position, it will not extend below the bottom of the container, while the extremity of the lip 16 lies within the edge of the'bead 11. Thus no. projecting surfaces are provided, which might interfere with the proper packing of the container for shipment. The slide 14 operates in a slot 17 provided in the bead 11 and is moved transversely of the width of the container to lift the cver, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. ln order to prevent the accidental removal of the slide from the slot, the former is provided with a stop 18 which limits its niovement in one direction. This stop may be formed in various ways, suoli as by a drop of' solder upon the outer face of the slide as illustrated in Figs. 1 to l of the drawings, or it may be formed by punching the material outward as shown at 19 in Fig. 5. This must be done after the slide has been inserted in the slot- 17 and various means may be employed for its accomplishment. For example, the male member of a punch may be positioned between the slide and the container with the latter resting upon a corner and a female punch member brought down upon the outer face of the slide.
lf desired, the slide may be used without the stop, having merely the lips 15 and 1G as shown in detail in Fig. 6.
ln Jforming the slit 17 in the bead l1, it may be necessary to deposit a drop of solder upon the inside of the box for the purpose of closing an opening which might conimunicate with the interior of the box through the formation of the slot 17, this solder being indicated at 20. If, however, the bead l1 is tightly crimped so that its Walls are pressed elosely'together in contacting relation, this solder will not be necessary, as no opening will extend into the receptacle.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention What is claimed is r* l. The combination with a container having an annular bead spaced from the open upper edge thereof and a removable flanged cover engageable over the container, of a member mounted for, sliding` movement through an opening in the bead and engageable with the edge of the cover for the rcmoval of the latter.
2. The combination with a container having an' annular bead spaced from the upper edge thereof and a removable flanged cover engageable over the container, of a member mounted for sliding movement through an opening in the bead, a lateral extension carried by said member for position beneath the bead and the edge. of the cover, whereby the cover may be removed through a sliding movement of the member.
8. The combination with a container having an annular bead spaced from the upper edge thereof and a removable flanged covei 4. The combination with a container hav- A ing an annular bead spaced from the edge thereof and a removable Hanged cover eugageable over the container, ot a suhstan tially Z shaped member mounted for .sliding movement through an opening in the bead, one end ot' said member being eugageable between the bead and the edge of the cover, while theopposite end extends outwardly to provide a. linger piece, whereby the cover may be removed through a sliding movement of the Z shaped member and :i stop carried by said member to limit its movement in one direction.
In testimony whereof I atlix mv signature.
CLARENCE LI' HAHN.
