V. NYLUND. CLOSURE FOR REGEPTAGLES. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 10, 1914.

CLOSURE FOR RE'CEPTACLES.
Specification of Letters E'atent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Application filed February 10, 1914.. Serial No. 817,887.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR NYLUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Closures for Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to receptacles and like containers and has for an object to pro vide a closure therefor.
' llhe invention embodies, more particularly, a closure for use on receptacles such as ash cansand like containers adapted for the reception of refuse or the like. For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a closure which, when in position on the receptacle, will securely close the same to prevent animals from gaining access to the receptacle and distributing the refuse or contents thereof or carry the refuse away from the receptacle, the closure, however, being readily removable manually when it is desired to empty the receptacle or fill the same with refuse.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the receptacle, showing the closure thereon; Fig. 2 is a plan view; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view, the full lines denoting the closed position of the closure and the dotted lines the unlocked position thereof.
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a receptacle 10 having a pcripheral bead 11 and adapted to receive a cover 12, preferably made of corrugated sheet metal or some other flexible material. The receptacle 10 is substantially round in shape and the cover 12 is slightly elliptical in order that the same may be properly locked on the receptacle 10 to close the same, the cover being also corrugated in order to give it a spring-like action. A handle 13 is provided for the cover 12, and mounted to slide vertically in the handle and extending therethrough is a rod 14 terminating exteriorly and above the handle in a grip 15, the lower end of the rod being adapted to lie within the cover 12 and terminating in ears 16 having pivotally connected thereto oppositely, downwardly inclined rods 17 having pivotal connection with sockets 18 rigidly secured to the under side of the cover and oppositely arranged adjacent the edge thereof. 7
Locking lugs 20' are supported on the edge of the cover 12 adjacent the sockets 18 and depend from the cover, the said locking lugs, when the cover is in position on the receptacle 10, being adapted to pass beneath the bead 11 of the receptacle and lock the cover thereto, it being readily apparent that the cover will be held in locked position by the spring-like action tending to draw the locking lugs inwardly against the receptacle, thus through the medium of the bead and locking lugs rigidly securing the cover on the receptacle.
Now when it is desired to remove the cover from the receptacle a downward pressure is exerted on the grip 15 of the rod 14:, thus imparting a downward and outward push to the rods 17 to bulge the edge of the cover adjacent the sockets. This will result in the edge of the cover being moved outwardly and away from the receptacle, thus moving the locking lugs out of engagement with the bead 11, so that the cover can easily be lifted and entirely removed from the receptacle. The locking lugs 20 preferably have inclined faces 21 so that when it is desired to secure the cover 12 on the receptacle 10, the same is simply pushed downwardly on the receptacle, thus causing the locking lugs to move outwardly when the same engage the bead and spring back into normal position beneath the bead 11 to lock the cover to the receptacle, when the locking lugs pass beyond the bead, this movement of the locking lugs being due entirely to the spring-like action of the material from which the cover 12 is made and wherefore the cover is preferably corrugated.
From the foregoing description it will thus be apparent that by applying a cover of the character described to a receptacle, the cover, when in normal position on the receptacle, will be locked thereto and cannot be readily removed by scavenging animals. whereas by simply pressing down upon the grip 15, the cover will be moved into an unlocked position so that the same can be lifted from the receptacle by pulling upwardly on the handle 13.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a closure for receptacles, tlie combination with a receptacle, of an annular bead thereon, a cover for the receptacle and provided with corrugations for giving the cover a spring-like action, locking lugs on the edge of the cover and adapted to engage the bead to lock the cover to the receptacle, sockets secured to the under side of the cover adjacent the said lugs, rods having connection with the said sockets and extending upwardly at an inclination to the apex of the cover, a grip exterior of the cover,
- and a connection between the said grip and the said rods whereby when a downward pressure is exerted on the grip the said cover will be bulged adjacent the said lugs by the push exerted on the rods to move the said lugs out of the Vertical plane of the said bead so that the said cover can be re moved from the said receptacle.
2. In a closure for receptacles, a cover formed of a spring-like material and normally supported on the receptacle to close the same, and means movably supported on the cover for bulging the same adjacent its edges whereby to permit of arranging the cover upon and securing the same in locked relation to the receptacle.
3. In a closure for receptacles, a cover formed of a spring-like material, means movably supported on the under side of the cover for bulging the same whereby to engage the edge of the cover with the receprods on the under side of the cover and ha\- ing connection with the same adjacent its edge for bulging the cover to permit of applying the same to the receptacle, and means for simultaneously actuating the said rods.
5. In a closure for receptacles, a cover formed of a spring-like material, locking lugs on the cover adjacent the edge thereof, said locking lugs being adapted for locking engagement with the receptacle, connected rods on the under side of the cover and hav- "1 ing connection with the same adjacent its edge for bulging the cover to permit of applying the same to the receptacle, and ahandle connecting with the rods for simultaneously operating the same to bulge opposed portion of the cover adjacent its edge.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
