Description

B. P. SAUNDERS.
SHIPPING CAN.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 9. I914- RENEWED AUG-20,1915.
6/ 1 V W H Ff 1 ATTORNEY BENJAMIN P. SAUNDERS, OF IATAN, MISSOURI.
SHIPPING -GA1\T.'
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ct. 5, 1215.
Application filed February 9, 1914, Serial No. 817,508. Renewed august 20, 1915. Serial No. 46,528. I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, BENJAMIN P. SAUN- onns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iatan, in the county of Platte and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping-Cans, of
which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to improvements in shippingcans, and my object is to produce a can or container of this character, whereby butter, lard, and other fat'containing products may be safely shipped by parcel,
llhe invention is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, and in order that said inventionmay be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical central section of the container. Fig. 2 is a plan .view of the container with the lid open and partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a broken front elevation of the container, and a latchfor securing the lid thereof in closed position. Fig. 4 is a content remover.
1n carrying out the invention, I employ a container 1, made, preferably, .of tin or other sheet metal and consisting of a cylinder 2 and a bottom portion 3.
The upper edge of cylinder 2 is bent outwardly to form a broad bearing surface 4 y for a gasket 5, and then bent downwardly and-inwardly against the side of the cylinder to brace and support the bearing surface 4. v
6 designates a lid secured by a hinge 7 to the downwardly and inwardly bent portion 8 at the upperend. of the cylinder.
Lid 6 is provided at a point diametrically opposite hinge 7 with a depending lip 9, having an inwardly extending luglO for engagement Withan eccentric latch 11, pivotally secured to the adjacent side of cylinder 2 by a pivot 12. 'Latch 11 has a handle 13, whereby it may be rocked on its pivot 12 to engage or disengage the stud 10. vBy
having the eccentric portion 14 of the latch engage the stud 10 as shown on Fig. 3, said latch firmly draws the lid 6 down upon the gasket 5, thereby making the upper end of the container 1 air-tight. v
The container remover shown in Figs. 1 and 4, comprises a plate 15, a rod 16, and a finger ring 17; Plate 15 fits snugly Within the container but is free to be withdrawn therefrom, and has a raised central portion 8 with a central threaded aperture to receive the threaded lower end of the rod 16, which is further secured by a wing-nut 19.
In practice, the butter or other produce to be shipped is, preferably, molded to fit snugly within the container 1, but before inserting it therein therod 16 is pushed through the central portion of the molded produce, then screwed into the plate 15 and then reliably secured by the wing-nut 19. The produce resting upon the plate 15, is now inserted in the container 1, which is sealed by drawing the lid 6 firmly against th'egasket 5 through the intermediacy of the latch 11. On reaching its destination the produce can be readily removed from the and it can be made in any cross sectional form, so that the least space is occupied when shipping a number of containers together.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
In a receptacle ofthe class described, a
container having a closed bottom, a plate removably mounted in the container, said plate having an upwardly extending pocket formed centrally thereof, and having its open end, confrontingthe bottom of the con tainer, a rod having a threaded end, said pocket having a threaded aperture therein for engagement by the threaded end of the rod, a lock nut confined in the pocket and above the bottom of the container, said nut being removably engaged with the threaded end of the rod, said rod being adapted to and below the plane of the upper edge of the i0 penetrate centrally material in bulk precontainer. vious to the placing of the material and In testimony whereof I aflix my slgnaytu 'e,
plate in the container, said rod and plate in the presence of two witnesses.
being removable from the container with the e material and a ring connected to the upper BENJAMIN SAUNDERS I end of the rod and being pivotally connected Witnesses:
thereto, whereby said ring can lie in a hori- F. G. ,FiecHER, zontal position on the top of the material L. J. FISCHER, v
