UNITED STATES PATENT i OFFICE,
CLAUS P. GERITZ, OF FREELAND, AND FRIEDRICH H. C. STAMM, OF
' HAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOBACCO AN D SN U FF RECEPTAC LE.
l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,632, dated July 24, 1894. Appnmnnneaipnizs,1894. semina. 509.150. (Nomad.)
To all whom it may concern:
, Beit known that we, CLAUS P. Gnnrrz, residing at Freeland, and FRIEDRICH H. O. STAMM, residing at Hazleton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Tobacco and Snuft Receptacle, of which the following is specification.
The invention relates to improvements in tobacco and snuff receptacles.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive tobacco and snu case or receptacle, adapted to preserve tobacco and snuff in its naturally moist condition, and to prevent the evaporation of moisture therefrom.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tobacco and snuff case or receptacle constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the tobacco case or receptacle.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
1 designates an outer cylindrical casing, constructed of sheet metal, and having a closed bottom 2; and arranged within the outer casing is a cylindrical lining 3, conconstructed of sheet metal and having a bottom` 4 and arranged concentric with the outer casing and forming an intermediate water space 5. The inner cylindrical lining terminates below the upper edges of the casing and is provided with a horizontal annular flange 6, extending outward from the top of the lining and permanently secured tothe outer casing and closing the top of the water space. flange 6 being arranged below the upper edges of the outer casing forms an annular coverreceiving space.
A lid or cover 7 is hinged, at 8, to one side of the casing, and is provided with a depending annular liange 9 fitting closely within the The outwardly extending annular upper edges of the outer casing, and contacting with the annular ange 6, when the lid is closed, thereby forming a tight joint. The casing is provided at opposite sides with ears 10, and hinged to them is a swinging bail 11, by means of which the tobacco receptacle may be readily carried.
The lid or cover is provided diametrically opposite the hinge 8,"with a swinging catch 12, having a circular opening 13 and adapted to engage over a curved projection 14 of the outer casing, whereby the lid or cover is securely locked when closed.
The outer casing is provided at one side with a filling opening 15, which is normally closed by a screw-cap 16, engaging a threaded flange 17, thatlsurrounds the filling opening.
The space between the outer casing and the inner lining is partially or entirely filled with water, or any other lsuitable liquid, and by this means the temperature of the tobacco is maintained sufficiently low t0 retard any evaporation of the moisture thereof, whereby the tobacco is maintained in its naturally moist condition. Any evaporation of the water in the annular water space also tends to lower the temperature of the tobacco and 'to prevent any evaporation of the moisture thereof.
The casing and the inner lining, which are shown cylindrical, may, if desired, be of any other form.
It will be seen that the tobacco case is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that water may be readily supplied to the annular water space, and that tobacco may be readily maintained in its naturally moist condition. p
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
A tobacco and snuff case or receptacle comprising an outer casing having a closed bottom and provided with a filling opening arranged at one side between the top and bottom thereof and provided with a threaded lian ge, a screwcap for closing the filling openi ing, an inner lining conforming to the conand means for securing the cover or lid to the casing, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto aixed ou-r signatures 15 in the presence of two witnesses.
CLAUS P. GERITZ. FRIEDRICH H. C. STAMM.
