Re it known that I, OSCAR B. WVELKER, a cniacn of the United States, and a resident of-Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented new and Improved Closures for Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for lclosing the filling opening of a tank or other similar structure, and an object of the invention,
tank, or for such other purpose as may be' desired.
One form of a'closure embodying my invention and in the construct-ion and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, isillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my .improved closure.

A support 13 is hinged to one Side ofthe base 7, this Support preferably having a dome 14 with an opening through which the end of a. hub 15 from a cap 16 extends, any Suitable means, as a nut 17, being employed to secure the hub 15 to the support 13.
The cap 16 is provided with fastening lugs 18 located preferably on diametrically opposite sides .of the lcap and of a widthl to be receivedl within the openings 12 and of a thickness to fit the slots 10. The hub 15 is so secured to the support 13 that the cap may be freely turned on such suppogpt, and
from the cap as a means for turning it.
A hole 20 may be formed through the hub 15 and may be closed by a member 21, these parts, however, not having any special significance .with respect tothe invention.
A gasket 22 may be placed upon the shoulder 9 to receive the support 13 and insure the sealing of the'closure at this point. This independently thereof, and arms 19 extend gasket is preferably of resilient material so C that the pressure against the cap 16 will cause sutiicient friction to insure retention of the lugs 18 in the slots 10.
While this device- 1s not limited in' its use to a receptacle of any special construction it has been found to be extremely advanleave a space within the hole which may be filled with metal -that may be tamped Iinto place, if suiciently soft, or that may be inelted'and run into the opening.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but Iy desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative andthat the invention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set out.
I claim- 1. A tank closure comprising a base, a support, means for movably, permanently attaching the support to the base` a cap swivelly and permanently attached to the support against lateral and longitudinal movement independently thereof, and means for temporarily locking the cap to the base.
2. A tank closure comprising a base having an opening therethrough, a support, means for pivotally and permanently attaching the support to the base, a cap pivotally attached to the support against lateral and longitudinal movement independently thereof and closing the opening through said base, and Ymeans vfor temporarily locking the cap to the base. f
3. A tank closure comprising a base having an opening therethrough, a support, a hinge for attaching the support to the base` a cap swivelly attached to the support against lateral and longitudinal movement independently thereof and closing the opening through said base. and means for locking the cap 1n engagement with the base.
4. A tank closure comprising a base having 'a locking slot with an opening thereinto, a support. a hinge for attaching the` support to the base, and a cap swivelly atattached to said base Within said slot. and a Cap having a hub `swivelly attached to said support, said cap and hase having at. their meeting edges a lug on one part adapted to engage an angulaislot in the other part.
6. A tank closure comprising a base and a cap, one of said members having a locking slot tor engagement by a lug on the other member to secure the cap in locked position., a support to Which said cap is swivelly attached against lateral and longitudinal movelnent independently of @said support, and a hinge for attaching the support to the base.
7. A tank closure comprising a hase having a locking slot. a support, a hinge for attaching the support to the base. and a cap swivelly attached to the support against lateral and longitudinal movement. independently thereof and having a lug to pass into and engage said slot to lock the cap to the base.
