Be it known that I, ELwooo G. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rogers Park, Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inBung-Hole Closures for Barrels and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bung hole closures for barrels and the like and one of the objects of the same is to provide an improved closure of this character, which may be quickly and readily adjusted to open or close the bung hole.
A further object is to provide means for holding the bung in position adjacent the bung hole within the container and against displacement or loss and for maintaining the bung in alinement with the bung hole.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention and. in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a barrel having a bung hole closure applied thereto, constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 Fig. 3 and showing two bung hole closures, one adapted to close the bung hole. in the side and the other to close the opening in the end of the barrel. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 'is a detail view of the bung clo sure. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the anchor or support for a bung adapted to close an opening in the side of the barrel. Fig. 6 is a similar view of an anchor or support for a hung in the end of the barrel. Fig. 7 is a detail view of a tool or implement for manipulating the bung.
In the drawing the closure is shown as being adapted for use in connection with barrels, butitis to be understood that it may be adapted for use with any suitable container. I
Referring more particularly to thedrawing, the numeral 10 designates a barrel having a bung hole in the 'sidethereof and fixedly arranged within this bung hole is a collar 11 having a threaded opening 12,v
and this collar is secured in position in any desiredor suitable manner.
Secured within the barrel and at any suit able position adjacent the bung hole is an anchor or support 13 which may be held in position in any suitable manner and is provided with a portion 1 1, having a threaded opening 15 and this threaded opening 15 is arranged in alinement with the threaded openingl2 of the collar 11.
A bung 16 is provided for closing the bung hole and thisbung is preferably constructed with an enlarged portion 17 intermediate its ends, preferably arranged in closer proximity to one end of the bung than the other end. The portions 18, 19 of the hung, on opposite sides of the enlarged portion 17 are preferably of the same size and are each screw threaded, the portion 19 being adapted to enter in the bushing l t to engage the threads therein, while the portion 18 of the bung is, adapted to enter the screw threaded openingl2 in the collar 11.
The portion of the bung 19 on one side of the enlarged portion 17,. and which engages the bushing 14;.1S of such a length that when the bung is adjusted to cause the threaded portion 18 to enter the threaded opening 12 of the collar 11, and the face 20 to engage the inner face of the collar 11, it will still remain in engagement with the bushing 1a.
The anchor or support 13 is spaced from the wall of the barrel, or that portion thereof containing the collar or bung hole and the enlarged portion 17 of the bung is arranged between the anchor or support and the wall of the barrel so that this enlarged portion not only acts as a closure for the bung hole, but also serves as a means for limiting the inward movement of the bung and to prevent its disengagement from the anchor or support. The anchor or support holds the extremity 18 of the bung in alinement with the threaded opening 12 of the collar 11 and this end of the bung is preferably provided with a socket or seat 21 for the reception of a tool or implement 22. This implement 22 is passed through the bung hole, when the bung is unseated as shown in Fig. 3, so that the extremity of the implement will engage the socket 21 of the bung, and by rotating the implement,
the bung will also be rotated, and its threaded engagement with the anchor or support 13 will cause the bung to be fed toward the bung hole and the threaded extremity 18 thereof will enter the threaded opening in the collar 11. This adjustment of the bung may be continued until the face 20 of the enlarged portion '17 en'gagest'he inner face of the collar and thereby tightly sealing or closing the bung.
When it is desired to open the bung hole, the implement is connected with the bung and the bungrotated in the opposite direction which will not only cause the threaded end 18 to be disengaged from the bung hole, but will cause the bung to be fed away from the bung hole by means of the threaded engagement of the portion 19 with the anchor or support 13.
In Figs- 2 and 3 thereis shown a means whereby the bung may be employed for closing an opening in either the side or the end of the barrel and when it is desired to close an opening in the end of the barrel, an
anchor or sun ort 23 ma be em 10 ed and l in this instance, one end of the anchor is socured as at 24 to the head of the barrel and the other end secured as -at-25 to the sideof the barrel. This'anchor or supportis provided with a bushing 26 similarto the bushing 14, and the same bung may be employed in both instances.
With this improved construction it will be manifest that the bung will always be maintained in position and in alinement with the bung hole so that the bung hole may not only be readily and quickly opened or closed, butthe bung may be supported some distance from the bung hole to permit the contents of the container to pass out of the bung hole and at the same time the bung'will beheld in true alinement with the bung hole, so that itsproper engagement with the wall of the bung hole when the bung is adjusted to close the opening, will be assured, and by closing the bung hole from the inside of the container, a more perfect seal may beobmined and there will be no protruding or projecting parts extending beyond the outer surface of the container. Furthermore, with this improved construction, the same bung may be employed av number of times and the bung will always be in position for ready use. It will also be manifest that by the threaded engagement of the bung with the anchor or support the bung will be maintained in its adjusted position and will be held against floating movement within the container. 7
What is claimed as new is:

T he combination of a container having an opening in the wall thereof, a closure for the opening, said closure disposed inside of the .container, a support for the closure adjacent the opening and spaced from the wall of the container, means for manipulating the closure, and interengaging means on the said support for limiting of the closure in one direction.

The combination of a container having a threaded opening in the wall thereof, a closure for the opening, said closure disposed within the container, a support for the-closure adjacent but spaced fromthe apertured wall of the container, a threaded connection between the closure and the support, a portion of the closure adapted to enter the said opening, threads on said portion f adapted to engage and disengage the threads in said opening, an enlargement on the closure adjacent the said portion,said enlarge ment being of a. size greater than the opening, and means for moving the said portion of the closure into and out of the said openmg. 1
