UMIED S AT "P OFFICE- EUGENE v.1vrYE-Rsjor asr ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO A. SCI-IRADERS SON, 1 11m, or BROOKLYN, new YORK, A CORPORATION or NEW YORK. 7
To an whomitmag concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE V. MYERS, a citizenofthe United States of America, residing inEast Orange, in the county of Essex andStateof New Jersey,-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for VVater-Bottles or the like, of which the following is a specification. 1 a
This invention relates to stoppers for waterbottles or the like, and aims to provide certain improvements therein.
The invention is particularly directed to thatform'ofstopper in which a neck memher -is employed which is fastened within the neck of the rubber water bottle. In such constructionsa socket member is employed which isconnected to the neck memher, into which socket member the stopper is screwed. plicable to constructions of this type in which the seat-for the stopper is at the upper part of the neck and the packing washer is carried on thejupperpartof the stopper so that when the stopper is screwed downwardly, water is permitted to enter and discharge from the back through passages or ports which are formed in the socket member immediately beneath the seat. The invention provides in this type of device a construction in which the stopper is always held in engagement with the screw-thread even when the ports are open, so that it is not necessary to adjust the stopper thread to the socket thread in closing the bag. The invention includes certain other features of improvement which will be hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate one form of the invention,-
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the device.
Fig. 2 is a similar section with the stopper shown in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Referring to the drawings, let A indicate a neck member which is usually constructed of one piece of sheet metal formed with a top wall a and side walls I) which are usually concave to afford a more secure connection with the neck of the water bottle.
Within the neck member A is a socket member B, the latter being connected at its upper end to the top wall (L of the neck member. Any suitable form of connection Specification of Letters I atent.
The invention is especially ap srorrnn ro twATER-Borrtr s on THE LIKE.

may be used, so long as a seat 0 is provided against which a packing'd of the stopper 0 can be compressed.
The stopper C is adapted to screw in the socket member B so that it may be raised and loweredwithin thelatter. The threads on the so'cketmember Band stopper are preferably left-hand threads so that when thestopper is screwed from left to rightit will rise and close the aperture 7", while when it is turned from right to left it will move downwardly, thus removing the pack ing d from the seat 0.
In order to permit water to flow into and out of the bottle when the stopper is in its lower position, the socket member is formed with apertures g which afford passages of sufficient area to permit the easy flow of the Water. i I p According'to the present'invention I provide a construction in which the stopper continuously engages the thread :of the socket member, so that the simple operations of screwing to right'or left will close or open'the'deviceu It has heretofore been proposed to provide a stopper which screws upwardly to close the bottle, but in such constructions the stopper is opened by screwing it entirely out of its socket member and permitting it to hang within the bag. In such construction there is diiiiculty in causing the stopper to engage its thread when it is desired to close the bag, and'this difli'culty is increased by the fact that an outward pull must be maintained on the stopper while the act of engaging the thread takes place. This is contrary to the nor mal operation of such devices, and in practice the ordinary user is apt to be confused by the difference in conditions. According to the present invention no pull need be exerted on the stopper, and no fitting of the threads is necessary. It is only requisite that the stopper be turned by its handle in one direction to closeit, and in the opposite direction to open it.
Preferably some stopping means is provided for forcibly preventing the disengagement of the stopper from its socket member, and this may be either the conformation of the handle which causes it to strike the upper wall a, or a flange, such as It, may be provided at the lower part of the socket member which is adapted to engage the bottom wall of the stopper. Other suitable means may be employed tor this \Vhile I prefer to use the neck member as.
a means. for connecting the socket member to the water bottle, it will be noted that other constructions may be adopted so-long as'the connection between the socket member and thewater bottle is such as to permit water.
from the bottle to flow through passages 9 when the stopper is lowered.
. WVhile I have shown and described one form of theinvention, it will be understood that I. do not wish to be'limitedthereto,
since various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
lVhat I claim is 1. A device of ,the character described. comprismg a neck member, a socket member.
connected at, its u )per end to said neck member, a seat at tie point of juncture of said parts, said socket member being formed with passages below said seat, and a stopper screwing in said socket member, said .stopper adaptedto make a tight joint with said seatwhen in its uppermost position, and to "a uncover said passages when in its lower.
means for. preventing said stopper from screwing completely out of saidsocket member. c a
3. A device of the, character described comprising a sheet metal neck member having, an upper. wall and side walls depending therefrom, a socket. member. lying within said side walls and having it upper ends connectedwith said'upper wall, a seat at the upper part of said socket member, a passage below said seat, a screw-threaded stopper engaging said socket member, and means forpreventing.said" stopper from screwing completely. out ,of said socket member.
In witness whereof,I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I 1
