CAN-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 27, 1914. Serial No. 841,377.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN HELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Closures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a ful],'clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to can closures embodying multiple covers and has for an object to provide a closure with new and improved features of convenience and security.
A further object of the invention is to provide a closure wherein thetendency of the internal friction cover to distend the neck of the can is resisted by the flange of an external slip cover.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The improved can closure which forms the subject matter of this application contemplates the use of any approved form of can body whose top is flat or conical and whose mouth comprises a cylindrical neck 10 having around its upper edge a flange 12 turned inwardly and then downwardly.
'Within the inwardly and downwardly turned flange 12, a friction cover 13 is employed substantially like the ordinary friction cover except that it has its edge upturned and then carried horizontally outwardly into an annular flange 11 adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the flange 12. As usual this friction cover is driven into the downturned flange and held therein with some considerable friction which necessarily slightly distends the neck 10.

WVhen a can is .filled with a substance which deteriorates by exposure to the atmosphere it is packed with the friction cover 13 in position which friction cover as is well known is substantiallyair tight. The slip cover 15 is then put in position as shown in Fig. 2, and its skirt by inclosing and grip-- ping the exterior of the neck 10 serves to retain the tapered friction cover 13 in position. When the can is received by the consumer the slip cover is removed, the friction cover is next removed by inserting any desired instrument under the flange 14 and prying it off and the slip cover 15 then put back in position for retaining'the contents of the can in condition while being used.
It will be found that, while the slip cover fitted rather tightly-when the friction cover was in place, now that the frictioncover is removed the slip cover slides over the cylindrical neck rather easily and drops a little farther theieon as seen in Fig. 3, sothat the lower edge of its skirt incloses the lower end of the neck where the latter merges into the body, rather than a little higher up as seen in Fig. 2.
As the period of use is short compared to the period of storage and shipment, it is not necessary that the sealing of the can be absolutely complete while being used, as it is while being shipped and stored.
