Description

Jun e Z1, 1938.
CONTINER AND CLOSURE vTHEREFOR Filed Aug. 8, 1936 H. CARI-:w 2,121,394 l Patented June 21, 1938 y UNiTEDsTATEs PATENT OFFICE 2,121,394 CONTAINER AND CLOSURE THEREFOR My invention provenients in a tei-iai. adapted to of a container and Application August 8,
Pa., assigner to Dixleon, Pa., a corporation of 1936, Serial N0. 95,023
2 Claims. '(Cl. 229-47) relates to new and useful imcontainer and closure therefor y to a closure cap, prefersimilar relatively still' mabe applied over the Vopen mouth secured in position against accidental displacement but adapted to be readily removed when it wise remove the container being similar material.
'I'he principal is desired to consume or othercontents of the container, the preferably formed of paper or object of the invention resides in the provision of a container. as stated, prefsimilar material, flexible or and normally pro on or bead around the normal open mouth portion thereof, and a closure, of
cardboard or in the form of a disc having bendable members connected thereto jecting horizontally beyond the u edge thereof, but adapted to be bent into engagement around and beneath the`outwardly extending projection around the mouth portion of the container.
Another object of the invention consists in the surrounding the mouth and to overlie the northe container, said closure being provided with circumferentially spaced bendable members,
which normally closure and extend preferably formed of wire, overlie a face portion of the horizontally beyond the edge portion thereof, these bendable members being. adapted to be bent downwardly and inwardly into engagement the container to tight engagemen container but ad with a projecting portion of normally hold the closure into t with the edge portion of the aptin g the closure to be readily removed when desired.
A further obje ct of the invention resides in the formation of a closure disc or cap having members connect disc may be secu ed thereto whereby the cap or red to a container, said members normally projecting horizontally beyond the edge of the closure d caps or discs to be readily stacked to preserve space or be positioned within a suitable container.
With the above which will appear my invention co and other objects invview, as the description proceeds,
nsists'in the novel. detailsof isc or cap but adapting the.
ments of the invention. as they now appear to me, it will be understood that such changes may be made as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing:-
Fig. 1 is a top plan showing a closure disc or cap with the connecting members projecting horizontally therefrom in normal position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing a container with a closure disc or cap resting on the mouth portion thereof with the connecting or securing members in their normal or horizontal position before being bent.
Fig. 3 is a top plan of a closure disc or cap in position upon a container with the connecting or securing members Iin engaging position.
the container.
Fig. 5 is a fragmental sectional detail showing in bottom plan a closure disc or cap secured in position;
Fig. 6 is a fragmental transverse vertical section, with parts in elevation, showing one of the securing members in engagement with the projecting portion of a container.
Fig. 7 is'a fragmental side elevation showing a slightly modified form of closure disc or cap in position on a container, with the securing members in their original horizontal position; and
Fig. 8 is a fragmental transverse vertical secon, with parts in elevation, of the modified form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 7, one of the securing members being shown bent in projecting portion of the container.
In the drawing l indicates a erably oi paper, in the form of tapered wall portion with an in container, prefa cup having a serted bottom 2 bead or projection 3.
My improved form of closure disc or cap is .preferably formed of cardboard or similar material and is shown at 4. This disc or cap will be of a diameter permitting it to rest upon the normally open mouth portion of the container as shown more particularly in Figs. 2, 4 and 6 of the drawing and in snug engagement therewith. For securing the closure Jdisc or cap to the container I provide a plurality of exible or bendable shown more particularly in Fig. 1 of ,the draw-v members carried by the disc or cap and adapted to be engaged around the bead or projection 3 of the container. In the drawing I have illustrated these flexible or bendable members 5 as being formed of wire with a portion of the arms 0 overlying the face of the disc or cap while the remaining portion or portions of the members project beyond the edge of the disc or cap as ing. The inner ends of the arms 6 are bent downwardly as shown at 1, Fig. 6, through openings 8 formed in the disc or cap and then outwardly as shown at 9. This forms a connection between the flexible or bendable members and the disc or cap and by having these flexible or bendable members project horizontally it will be understood that a plurality of the closures may be arranged in stack-formation either on a suitable support or in a suitable container. While I have shown and described the flexible-or bendable members as being formed of wire it will be understood that they might be formed in other ways such as by securing a thin metal plate or the like to the disc or cap. However, by providing the members of wire they may be easily bent and cover a relatively wide surface around the projection or bead 3 of the container.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing I have illustrated a closure in its normal form with the flexible or bendable members 5 extending horizontally to a point beyond the edge of the disc or cap and with portions of the arms thereof overlying the face of the disc or cap. After the container has been filled with the desired commodity the closure may be positioned as shown more particularly in Fig. 2 of .the drawing and then the flexible or bendable members 5 will be bent into the position shown more particularly in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 of the drawing around and under the projection or`bead 3 of the container. Where this has been done the closure disc or cap will be securely held with respect to the container butwhen it is desired to eat or remove the commodity within the container the flexible or bendable members may be engaged and bent away from the projection or bead 3 to permit ready removal of the closure from the containerf While in the drawing I have illustrated four of the circumferentially spaced securing or connecting members 5 it will be appreciated that other numbers of these members may be used as found expedient in use. It will also be seen that the flexible or bendable members are of such a width as to engage beneath the projection or bead o f the container for a relatively wide space circumferentally thereof.
In Figs. l and 8 of the drawing I have illustrated a slightly modified form of my invention in which the peripheral edge of the closure disc or cap AIll is curved downwardly as shown at il to extend partly around and conform to the curvature of the bead or projection 3 of the container I. ble or bendable securing members l2 are of a construction similar to the members 5 of the othervform shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive and normally project horizontally from the disc or cap and are adapted to be bent around the bead or projection I as shown in Fig. 8.
Having fully described my invention what I claim las new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- 1. In combination with a container formed of paper or other fibrous material and having an outwardly directed readily compressible rounded bead at its normally open mouth, of a closure including a disc of fibrous material and of a diameter to permit it to be seated on the upper surface of the rounded bead and a bendable member secured to the disc and normally projecting horizontally beyond the marginal edge thereof with a portion extending parallel with the disc, said bendable member being adapted to be bent around the rounded bead of the container and into engagement with the under surface thereof, the engagement of the bendable member with the bead drawing the disc into tight seating engagement with the compressible bead to provide a tight seal between the closure and container.
2. In combination with a container formed of paper or other fibrous material and having an outwardly directed readily compressible rounded bead at its normally open mouth, of a closure vincluding a disc of fibrous material and of a diameter to permit it to be seated on the upper surface of the rounded bead, the marginal edge of the disc being downwardly curved to conform to the curvature of the upper portion of the bead only and not to extend around or under the bead, and a bendable member secured to the disc and normally projecting horizontally beyond the marginal edge thereof with a portion extending parallel with the disc, said bendable member being adapted to be bent around the rounded bead of the container and into engagement with the under surface thereof, the engagement of the bendable member with the bead drawing the disc into tight seating engagement with the compressible bead to provide a tight seal between the closure and container.
