To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NnLs A. SwANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock lsland and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Pans, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. i y
This invention relates to certain improvements in ash pans, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the pan may be e1 fectually closed to prevent the [flying of dust or the like when the panis removed from the ash pit. l i
It is also an object of the invention to pro.- vide a novel amlimproved pan of this generalcharacter having a foldable cover for the top thereof, together with means whereby said cover may be moved into open or closed position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination. and arrangement of the several parts of my improved ash pan whereby certain 1111130111111; advantages are attainedand the device rendered simpler, less expensiveand otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use,

in order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

As disclosed in the accompanying draw ings, P denotes a pan of desired configuraton and dimensions and which comprises the marginal flanges 1. The portion of the rear marginal flange 1 substantially midway thereof has pivoted therewith a hook member 10 which overlies the door 7 when in closed position and engages a keeper 12 or the like extending from the outer face of the door 7 The opposite or front marginal flange 1 substantially midway its length is provided with a vertically disposed plate 14 provided with the vertically. directed slot 15 through adjacent each end thereof and below an outer panel 2 of the closure member or door D is a shaft 18 having its inner end provided with a crank 19 pivotally engaged with said outer panel 2 while the outer end end portion of the arm 21 is pivotally engaged with the slide 16 so that when upward 'movement is imparted to the slide 16, the
panels 20f each of the closure members or doors D will be caused to fold and swing outwardly to open the top of the pan P, and whereby downward movement of the slide 16 will cause the closure members or doors D to assume. a closed position.
In practice, the closure members or doors D are not intended to be opened until after the pan P has been properly inserted within the ash pit or boX of a stove. By having the slide 16 coacting with the forward marginal flange l of the pan, the requisite opening of said members or doors D may be readily accomplished. the pan, the slide 16 is moved downwardly to close said members or doors D. The bail B permitsthe pan to be readily transported as required, and to empty the contents of the pan, it is only necessary to open the door 7.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious than an ash pan constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenienceand facility with which it ma be assembled and operated, and it will a so be obvious that my invention is sus- When it is desired to remove ceptible of some change and modificatioi'i without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
An ash pan having one face open, a pair of closure members coacting with said open face of the an, each of said closure members comprising hingedly connected panels, the
outer panel of each of the closure members being hingedly connected with the pan and the inner panel of each of said members having sliding engagement with the pan, a slide carried by the pan and having movement toward and from the open face thereof, a shaft rotatably supported by the pan adjacent each of the outer panels and having a rock arm engaged with said panel, said shaft having a second rock arm, and an arm pivotally engaged with each of the second named rock arms and pivotally engaged with the slide for imparting swinging movement to said outer panel, the sliding connections of the inner panels with the pan causing the panels of each of the closure members to overlie when the outer panel is moved into open position.
