To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEANDER R. BATTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeland, in the county of Polk and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Pans for L0- comotives; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in ash pans, more especially for locomotives.
It has for its object, among other things, to expedite or facilitate the removal of the ashes from the pan, and to lessen the labor thereof, and otherwise improve the device.
It also has for its object to obviate the use of a steam blast for aiding the removal of the ashes, and accordingly to reduce the expense for effecting that end.
Said invention therefore consists of certain structural features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the claim.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is an inverted plan view thereof. Fig. 2 is a broken longitudinal section of the same, showing how the slats appear in open position for the purpose of discharging the ashes. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 1-1, Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention, I form the pan 1 in general outline of the usual contour, and provide the same with a bottom generally designated as 2, said bottom being composed of a series of slats or members 3 having vertical extending shield portions 4, said shield portions being curved outwardly and upwardly from each of their respective slats, also being preferably integral therewith. Said slats or members are each pivotally supported in position within the bottom portion of the pan, the pivoting or hinging of said slats in position, being effected preferably by means of rods 5, received by keepers 6, suitably fastened to each slat, said rods being also received by eye-like formations 7 secured upon the lower edges of the pan, said rods being arranged about centrally of each slat. gage an angular extension 9 of a substantially T-shaped bracket 10, said bracket being secured by any preferred means to the near edge and about the middle of each of the slat members 3, said parallel members 8 and 8 being pivotally secured to the angular extensions 9 by means of pins 11, and these are secured flat against the parallel portions which comprise the lever as seen particularly in Fig. 2, thus providing, it is believed, for additional strength at the points of connection between said lever and said slats. The said lever is arranged for convenient manipulation by the attendant and the slats to which said lever is secured, are adapted to fit ash-tight at their ends, as may be readily seen by the over-lapping portions as shown in Fig. 2 by the small and broken lines, thereby providing against the leakage of ashes and also to prevent the draft or blast generated by the motion of the locomotive from entering the ash pan at those points.
It will be noted that in order to remove the ashes from the pan, it is only necessary to suitably manipulate the lever 8-8 so as to swing or move the slats forming the bottom of said pan upon their pivots, when, of course, said slats will be disposed at an inclination, and thus readily permit the ashes to be dumped therefrom into the ash pit, said slats being readily returned to their initial position by reversing the movement of the actuating lever. It will be noted that this arrangement dispenses with the use of a steam jet or other means, as heretofore adopted in this connection for removing the ashes from the ash pan, thus lessening expense for this purpose, while simplicity and economy will be promoted, and the operation of cleaning the ash pan be greatly facilitated.
I claim:
A device of the character described, comprising an ash pan having a bottom com posed of a series of overlapping slats, said slats being pivotally mounted within the frame of said pan, shield portions integral with said slats and extending upwardly and outwardly therefrom and contacting with the sides of said pan, said shield portions being substantially semi-circular in outline and overlapping one another when in a closed position, brackets approximately T- shaped secured at their heads to the under sides of said slats, the tongues of said brack bracket-tongues being inserted therebetween and secured thereto, whereby when said lever is moved back and forth said slats are opened and closed.
