SIDE-DELIVERY BODY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 11, 1911.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
Serial No. 613,868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS \Vmoivr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Side-Delivery Body, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to side dclivery bodies forwagons and the like and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention to provide a body with means whereby the contents of the body may be directed fro the same to one or the other side thereof during the operation of unloading and also to provide simple and effective means for closing the openings provided in the bottom of the body when it is desired that the body shall retain its load.
In the accompanying drawings :F igure 1 is a transverse sectional view of one form of body. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the form of body as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. i; is a transverse sectional view of a modified form of body. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the form of body as illustrated in Fig. 3.
The body 1 is provided with inclined bottom sections 2 which slope downwardly at their inner edge portions toward the middle of the body 1. The inner edge portions of the bottom sections 2 are spaced forming openings or an opening 3. Chutes 4 are located under the body 1 and the opening 3 in the bottom thereof and have their bottoms disposed downwardly toward the opposite sides of the body 1. Closures are arranged to operate in the upper portions 01 the chutes 1 and when in closed positions interrupt the passageway through the opening 3 from the interior of the body 1 into the upper portions of the chutes 1. As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the said closures include gates 5 which are slidably mounted upon cross beams G with which the body 1 is provided. The said gates 5 are provided with inclined upper surfaces 7 which are adapted to close against the edges 50 lot the opening 3 in the bottom of the body 1. Bell crank levers 8 are fulcrumed to the sides of the body 1 and rods 9 are pivotally connected at their outer ends with the working ends of the said bell crank levers and at 55 their inner ends are pivotally connected with the outer ends of the gates 5. Guards 10 are attached to'the lower portion of the body 1 and extend under and in. "front and behind the chutes t and serve as means for protecting the said chutes from coming in contact with objects that might be in the path of said chutes as the body is moving with a wagon or other vehicle. \Vhen the gates 5 are in closed positions under the opening 3 the power ends of the levers S and the rods 9 are substantially in alinement and ccmsequently the said gates will be held in their closed position. lVhen it is desired to open one or the other of the gates an operator swings the lever 8 whereby its working end is raised and the attached rod is moved longitudinally and the gate 5 connected therewith is slid from under the opening 3. Thus passageway is established between the interior of the body 1 and the chute 4 and the material carried by the said body is free to gravitate through the said passageway.
In the form of the invention as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 1 of the drawings, hinged gates 10 are provided the said gates being supported by the beams 6. Bell crank levers 8 and connecting rods 9 similar to those described in connection with the other parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are also employed. In this form of the invention when the gates 10 are closed against the openings 3 in the bottom of the body 1 the working ends of the bell crank levers 8 and the rods 9 are in alinement and consequently the said gates will be held in closed positions because the thrust set up by the weight of material resting upon their upper sides will be along straight lines passing through the rods 9 and the upper arms of levers 8 and through the pivots thereof.
It will be apparent that in both forms of the structure shown and described the upper faces of the closures, when said closures are in normal or closed positions, are parallel with the adjacent portions of the bottom of the body 1 and the contents of the body will thus gravitate over the closures and not become lodged thereon as would be the case should the closures be formed with substan tially horizontal upper faces.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a body having an outlet opening in the bottom thereof and delivery chutes extending from the center of the opening to opposite sides of the body,
of gates for closing communication between the body and the respective chutes, each gate when closed having its upper face inclined and parallel with the adjacent portion of the bottom of the body to direct the contents of the body onto the other closure or into the other chute and means for separately moving the gates laterally to open or close them, said means, when either gate is closed, constituting means for locking the gate against opening under the weight of the contents on the gate.
2. The combination with a wagon body having an outlet opening in the bottom thereof and chutes extending from the center of the opening to opposite sides of the body, of separately movable gates for closing communication between the body and the respective chutes, each gate having an inclined upper face for directing the contents of the body into the opposed chute when the gate is closed and mechanism for actuating each gate, said mechanism constituting means for locking the gate in closed position.
3. A delivery body having an outlet opening in the bottom thereof, chutes extending from the center of the opening toward opposite sides of the body, separately movable gates for closing communication between the body and the respective chutes, each gate when closed having its upper face parallel with the adjacent portion of the bottom of the body and inclined downwardly toward the bottom of the opposed chute, and mechanism for actuating each gate, said mechaper faces parallel with the adjacent portions of the bottom of the body, each gate, when closed, constituting means for directing the contents of the body into the opposed chute when its gate is open, and means for separately actuating the gates, said means each including a bell crank lever one arm of which constitutes a handle, and a link connection bet-ween the other arm of the lever and the gate, said connection and arm being movable into alinement when the gate is closed to lock the gate against opening.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS WRIGHT.
