PATENT OFF CE.
DUMPIN G WAGON.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 739,325, dated September 22, 1903. Application filed July 30,1903. Serial No. 167,643. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADAM J. KOOB, a citi-' zen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Dumping-Wagon, of which the following is a specie fication.
This invention relates to dumping-wagons; and one of the objects to be attained thereby is to provide asuitable mechanism whereby the removal of the load can be expeditiously and conveniently accomplished.
Another object is to provide such improvements in a device of the class described which will generally improve the efficiency and durability thereof.
Further objects and advantages of this invention, as well as the novel details of construction of the preferred embodiment of this invention, will be described hereinafter, refereuce being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wagon-body constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same.- Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 isa transverse section'fand Fig. 5 is a de-' tail View of one of the hangers.
The numerals 1 l designate the sides of th wagon-body, and 2 2 the ends thereof, which rest upon the sills 3 3.
4 designates an intermediately-disposed rib, which is illustrated as an angle-iron, with its ends passing through the ends 2 2 of the boX, the edges of. the rib resting upon the sills 3 3.
As considerable weight will b'esupported by.
one side of the rib are designated by the reference- numerals 6 and 6, the leaf 6 being hinged to one of the sides 1 1 and the leaf 6 being secured by hinges 7 to the under side of the angle-iron 4. One leaf of each hinge fits snugly against the angle-iromso that the adjacent edges of the angle-ironand leaf 6 are substantially coincident, so that the'conten ts within the body will not be accidentally dislodged. The leaves 8 and 8 on the other side of the rib or angle-iron are supported in the same manner as those designated by the reference- numerals 6 and 6,-and when the complementary leaves in each pair are in a horizontal plane the; adjacent edges contact to insure the integrity of the closure.
A suitable mechanism is provided for nor- I mally holding the leaves in a horizontal position, but which can be controlled so as to permit the leaves to swing downward, so as to emptythe body. is provided for each set of leaves, and each mechanism comprises a pair of props, one at each end of its'particular pair of leaves, the props being simultaneously controlled, so as to exert a corresponding influence upon the leaves. Hangers 9 and 9' are provided with shanks 10, which project through openings 11 in the angle-irons 4, and each hanger is pro- A separate mechanism vided with ahead-l2, having a shoulder 13,
which bears against a washer 14,-interposed between the leaveso and'5 of the angle-iron,
so that when the nut or-taps 15 are threaded upon the shanks 10 of the hangers they will be held rigid with relation to the angle-iron.
On the sides of the head 12 is a lug or projection 17 and 17', which constitute'journals for the inner terminals of the props18 and 18. These props are in the form of stirr'ups, being intermediately curved or bowed, so that as they are rocked the leaves will be in constant contact therewith and will easily ride thereon. The ends of the props remote from the ends connected to the hanger are supported by hangers 19 and 19', having connected by a pitman 23, so that the arms and props will work in unison. One of the arms in each set merges into a hand-lever 24. Within easy reach of the operator and adjacent thereto is a catch or stop 25, which may be engaged by the lever to lock the stops against movement, in which position the leaves 6 and 6 or 8 and S will be maintained in a horizontal position. By throwing the levers out of contact with the catch the weight of the load will swing the leaves downward, permitting the escape of the contents of the body.
It will be seen that either one or both sides of the body can be conveniently dumped to the exclusion of the other and that the dumping can be expeditiously accomplished without the necessity of the driver leaving his seat.
I claim- 1. A wagon-body having a rigid rib in the bottom thereof, leaves hinged to the rib and to the body, a hanger supported by the rib and having a laterally-disposed lug, and a prop terminally engaging said lug and normally bearing against the leaves to hold them against movement.
2. A wagon-body having hinged bottom leaves and a longitudinally-disposed anglebar, a hanger carried by the bar and provided with a shank projecting through the anglebar and a bottom-closing mechanism carried
