A' Be it knownthat I, JAMES FREEMAN l SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Smith Center,in the county of Smith `and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to end gates for wagons.

One of the main objects of the invention is to provide an end gate which may be permanently secured in the wagon and may be used as a shoveling board 0r as a dumping gate, optionally. A further object is to pro- .vide an end gate in combination with simple gate into and out of operative position for use as a shoveling board. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.

The gate has the upper body portion 1 which is provided with a plurality of spaced longitudinally extending reinforcing strips 2 and 3 of sheet metal. or any other suitable material. This hook is adapted to engage into the eye 13 of an eye bolt the threaded shanl- 14 of which extends through a plate 15 secured to the side 16' of the wagon body. The eye 13 of this bolt, when the bolt is in operative position. its into the horizontal arm 17 of an L-sliaped slotformed in the side 16 of the wagon body. An interiorly threaded sleeve or collar 18 is threaded on to the shank 1 4 ot' the eye bolt and is provided with an integral operating crank 19. By l means of the, crank 19 the bolt may be moved through the side of the wagon body in either direction. A bar 2O similar to bar 10 is mounted in spaced relation to the strip 7 rotating the collar 18 by/ of door 4, and a bolt 21 siinilar to bolt 11' is g pivotally secured at its inner end between the end of this bar and the strip 7 by means of a bolt 22 passed through the same. The hook 21 is adapted to engage into the eye 23 of an eye bolt similar to that which receives hook 11, and which has a collar 24 threaded on to its shank 25. A securing bolt 26 is slidably mounted between the bar 20 and the strip 7, at the center of the gate. This bolt is secured'in position by means of a headed screw 27 which is passed through a longitudinally extending slot 28 formed at the center of bolt 26, near the lower end thereof, and is threaded into the door 4. This'permits limited vertical movement of the bolt in either direction. `The bolt is adapted to engage into a recess 29 provided in the bottom 30 of the wagon body, when in operative position. In this position the bolt acts to positively prevent outward movement of the A gate 4. The bolt is turned outward at right angles, at its upper end, to provide an integral thumb grip 31 which facilitates movement ot' the bolt into, and out of, operative position. i

Normally, the gate will be permanently secured in the end of the wagon body as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In this position hooks 11 and 21 are in engagement with Ytheir respective eye bolts, and the eye bolts are drawn tightly outward through the sides of the wagon body. This etfectually secures the end gate in the wagon body.` In this position the inwardly extending end pieces 32 of the gate engage into the keepers 33 secured to the inner face of each side of the wagon body, these keepers coperating with the end pieces'of the gate to securely brace the gate against lateral movement, and serving to lreinforce ther structure as a whole.

A transversely extending bar 34 is secured to the inner face of eachY end piece 32 of thegate. A link 35 is pivotally secured at one end to the inner end of this bar, and is pivotally secured at the otherend to one end of a link 36 the other end of which is pivoted Vto one end of a link 37. The other end of link 37 is pivoted to the lower end of a link 38 the upper end of which is pivotally secured to an upright 39 secured to the side `hooks 11 and 21 respectively, are in a horizontal position. l/Vhen it is desired to use [the gate as a shoveling board,.the collars 18 and 24 are rotated so as to permit sutlicient inward movement of the eye bolts to disengage the hooks from the eyes of the same. When the hooks have been disengaged from the eyes of the leye bolts, these bolts are moved outward, the eyes thereof being turned into vertical position so as to ,fit into the vertical arms 17a of the L-shaped4 slots 17 formed in the side walls 16 of the wagon body. For this purpose the shank of the bolt is mounted loosely through the plate 15, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. When moved into this position the eyes of the bolts do not project beyond the inner faces of the sides of the wagon body. This permits the end gate to be moved Voutward bodily, this outward movement being limited by the links 35. 3G, 37 and 38, as previously described. Before moving the end gate out, ward, the securing bolt 26 is raised into inoperative position. lVhen the gate has been moved outward, it is placed at an yinclination with the lower edge of the gate resting on the upper face of the wagon bed adjacent the endy thereof, and the lower end of bolt 26 in engagement with the end of the wagon bed. By this means the gate is secured at a downward and inward inclination so as to provide a shoveling board, as

shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

VWlhat I claim is: The combination of a wagon body, an end gate mounted therein and havingY limited outward movement relative to the body, said end gate being composed of a body portion and a door hingedly mounted therein for outward movement at its upperV edge, the lower edgev of the door being flush with the lower edge of the gate body and the door being of less length than the body of the gate and disposed centrally thereof, a plurality of pivotally connected links secured to the wagon body and to the body of the gate adapted to positively limit the outward movement of the gate relative tothe body, securing hooks carried by thebody of the gate and by the door of the gate, eyebolts mounted for movement through the sides of the wagon body and adapted to be engaged by the said hooks, means for moving the said eye bolts through the sides of the wagon body, and a securing bolt carried by the door and having limited vertical movement, said bolt being adapted to engage the bed of the wagon body so as to prevent outward movement of the door of the gate when in lowered position and, when in raised position, to engage the end of the wagon body so as to secure the gate in position as a shoveling board.
