Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed April 2, 1906. Serial No. 309,373.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH B. PosPEsHIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan,
ave invented a certain new and useful lmprovement in Wagon-Boxes, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
his invention relates to wagon boxes.
It has for its object a wagon box adapted to be used for a dumping wagon. The same character of box may be used when it is desired to have a close bottomed box with a hinged cover, as for example, a garbage wagon.
In the drawings :Figure 1, shows the side elevation of the box, indicating its position with respect to the truck wheels. Fig. 2, is a rear elevation of the box. Fig. 3, shows the mechanism for lifting and holding the folding bottom in place. Fig. 4, shows the box employed as a garbage receptacle.
The appliances for lifting the bottom are omitted when the box is used for a garbage receptacle, but the hinge connections are the same. a
1 and 2 indicate the sides of a wagon box, to which are secured pivot rods 3 and 4, of a double 'jointed hinge structure. The two sides are symmetrical, and a description of the structure pivoted on rod 3 will'furnish a clear understanding of the structure pivoted on rod'4. The pivot 'rod 3 is located intermediate the top and bottom edges of the vertical side 1, and is held clear from the sides by the brackets 5 and 6, by means of which the rod 3 is held in position.
Links 7 engage pivotally on the rod 3, and also engage pivotally with a second rod 8, which acts as the second pivot rod in the double jointed. hinge connection which holds the bottom to the sides.
Straps 10 are secured to a folding bottom leaf 9, and the straps 10 are pivotally connected to the rod 8. The axis of the rod 8 should be in the upper plane, or substantially in the upper plane of the leaf 9. A pivoted brace 11 is secured to the end board 12 of the box, and to the leaf 9 intermediate its hinged edge and its free edge, and nearer to the free edge than to the hinged edge.
Suspension springs 16 are secured to the side board 1, and to the pivot rod 8.
When the structure is used for a dumping wagon, chains 13 are held to an equalizing lever 14, on the rear end-board, pass around sheaves in bearings 15, thence pass to the front of the wagon, where they again pass around sheaves and rise to a drum 22, that is actuated by ratchet lever 17, and ratchet wheel 18 and held by the said ratchet lever 17 and a foot actuated pawl 19.
To use the same construction of hinged leaf for a garbage wagon, the box is substantially reversed, except of course that where the box itself is usedas apart of the wagon body, and no other reach is used, except the side boards of the box, (as shown in the drawings) as is frequently and indeed generally the case, the side boards of the box are not reversed, but the hinge links 7 are turned upward instead of downward, the spreading addition 20 to the box is removed and the top leaf 21, which corresponds in shape and action to the bottom leaf 9, folds over the top instead of under the bottom. In both cases the bracket link 11 is employed and serves to guide and hold the folding leaf in its proper relation to the box.
What I claim is 1. In the box of a dump wagon, in combination with fixed side boards, a unitary pivot rod extending lengthwise of the box intermediate the top and bottom of the outer face of each side board, a plurality of pivot links depending from said rod, a pair of bottom boards, pivot connections between each and the free ends of said pivot links on the side to which they are appurtenant, a spring adapted to yieldingly oppose the movement of said bottom boards to their closure position with respect to the box and to retract the same to positions on the outside of the side boards and in substantial parallelism with them, a lifting chain passing under each bottom board near its free edge, means for actuating the same, and a pivoted controlling link for each bottom board whereby its movement with res ect to the side boards is limited, substantial y as described.
2. In the box of a dump wagon, in combination with side boards and a folding leaf closure, a'unitary pivot rod secured to each leaf, an equalizing lever over which said side board intermediate its top and bottom chains pass, and means for actuating said edges, a second unitary pivot rod secured to chains, substantially as described.
the folding leaf, a plurality of pivot links 4. In the box of a dump Wagon, in combiunitingthe pivot rods, a lifting chain passing nation with fixed side boards, a bottom clounder each leaf near its free edge, means for sure divided longitudinally along the middle actuating the lifting chains, an equalizing line of the bottom, double jointed hinges lever connected with the two chains and connecting each of the parts of said bottom tension springs connecting the side boards of closure to the side board of the box said the box and the folding leaves whereby, upon hinges being fixed to said side boards interthe release of tension upon the chains, they mediate their top and bottom edges, a guidare drawn outside of and to substantially the ing link pivoted to said box and to the parts same level with the side boards, substan of the bottom near the meeting edges thereof tially as described. retractile springs extending between points 3. In combination with the box of a dump on the upper portions of the side boards and wagon, folding leaves forming the bottom the hin ed outer edge of each bottom closure,
closure, unitary pivot rods extending along control ing chains, means for actuating said the outer edge of each of said leaves, supchains and an equalizing bar for said chains,
orting rods extending lengthwise of each substantially as described.
