Specification of Letters Patent. l
Patented Jan. 2, 1906.
Application filed Tune 5, 1905. Serial No. 263,860.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CRANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Veedersburg, in the county of Fountain and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-Wagons, of which the following is a speciiication.
The obj ect of my invention is to produce a simple effective dumping structure for wagons in which the dumping-bottom may be readily operated with a minimum force, the structure being such that the weight of the load tends to keep the operating members in holding position.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a transverse section of one form of my invention; Fig. 2, a similar section of a modified form; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of another modiiication.
In the drawings, referring to Fig. 1 10 indii cates one ofthe usual holsters, 11 11 the vertical sides, and 12 one end ofthe bed. Running lengthwise of the structure is a V-shaped center 13, which may be supported by a suitable truss-rod 22. Hinged to the lower edge of each side 11 is a dumping-bottom 14, the inner edge of which is adapted to be brought up beneath the outer edge of one side of the V-shaped center 13. Each dumping-bottom 14 is supported at its inner edge by one or more chains 15, the upper ends of which are attached to a longitudinalbar 16, whichforms the longitudinal member of a yoke, the arms 17 of which extend downwardly and are pivoted at 18 to the adjacent end 12, the arrangement being such that when the arms 17 are swung to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 chains 15 will pass slightly beyond the dead-center of the arms 17A-fi. e., between the pivot-pins of the arms 17 and the center of the wagon-while when the arms 17 are thrown outward to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 the chains will lie upon the other side of the pivot, and thus permit the dumping-bottom 14 to swing downward. When theparts are in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the weight of the load on the dumping-bottoms 14 tends to swing yokes toward, each other, and in order to support said yokes I provide suitable supporting members 19, which limit the inward movement of the yokes to a point just beyond the dead-center.
In Fig. 2 the construction is similar to that already described, except that the dumpingbottoms 14 instead of being hinged at their outer edges are each pivoted upon an axis which passes between the middle of the bottom and the Outside edge, so that said bottom 14 may be swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the weight of the load still serving to open the bottoms as soon as the yokes are swung outward.
In Fig; 3 the construction is that shown in Fig. 1, except that a transverse dumping-bot torn 20 is provided for that portion of the bed which lies to the rear of the rear bolster, said dumping-bottom 20 being hinged at its rear edge to the rear end of the frame and having its forward end supported by a chain 21, which is attached to one of the yoke members 16. As shown in Fig. 3, the front end is forwardly and upwardly flared, as at 12l thus increasing the capacity of the bed, but still projecting the front bolster and preventing a gathering of material on said bolster. In structures where the bed does not extend beyond the rear bolster the rear end would be made in the same way.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a dumping-wagon, the combination, with the bed frame, of a swinging bottom therefor, a swinging arm, a connection between said swinging arm and the free end of the swinging bottom member, and means for limiting the swing of said swinging arm in one direction at a position slightly beyond the dead-center relative to the swinging bottom and the connection between said bottom and said lever.
2. In a dumping-wagon, the combination, with the main bed, of a swinging bottom member therefor normally tending to Open by reason of its weight, a substantially vertically swinging arm pivoted on said bed, a connection between said arm and the free end of said swinging bottom member, and means for limiting the movement of said arm in one direction to a point where the connection between said arm and the swinging bottom member is slightly past the dead-center.
3. In a dumping-wagon, the combination, with the main bed, of a swinging bottom member for a portion thereof mounted upon a substantially longitudinal axis, a second IOO of said head and mounted upon a transverse axis, an operating-lever mounted to swing hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this g1 a substanilly veroal lllalfie, cnnections 15th day of May, A. D. 1905.
etween sai ever an eac o sai swinging bottoms, and means for limiting the swing of GEORGE W' CRANE' 5 said lever at a. point slightly beyond its dead- Witnesses:
center. ARTHUR M. Hoon,
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my JAMES A. WALSH.
