Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1905.
Application filed February 15,1905. Serial No. 245,769.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN H. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dumping-cars in general use for dumping ore or other material, the object of the invention being to provide a dumping-car which will be more simple and cheap in construction, durable in use, and eflicient in operation than those heretofore employed.
My invention'therefore resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts for the above ends hereinafter fully specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved dumping-car. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same tilted to discharge the contents.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a truck-frame mounted upon wheels 2. Upon said truck-frame are secured bearings 3 for a transverse shaft 4:, extending through hangers 5, depending from the bottom of the carbody 6. Said car-body is thus supported by means of said shaft 4 upon said truck and can be tilted on said shaft to discharge the contents. At its rear end the car-body rests upon a support 7, extending upward from the truck, and is normally held down to said support by means of a hook 8, depending from the rear end of the car-body and engaged by a pivoted latch 9, which is thrown into engagement with said hook by means of a spring 10 engaging the lower portion of said latch. A longitudinal rod 11 can slide longitudinally through the frame and impinge against the lower end of the latch to release it from the hook. When the car arrives at the place where it is desired to dump the ore, a projecting forward end of said rod 11 impinges against a suitable abutment 12 on the track 13, thereby pressing the rod backward, withdrawing the latch from the hook, and permitting the carbody to tilt, which it does by reason of its momentum. As it tilts, the gate 1 1, which closes the front end of the car-body and is hinged thereto at the upper edge, as shown at 15, swings forward and allows the material to be discharged from the car-body. In the normal position of the car said gate is held closed by means of cables 16, which are socured to the sides of said gate, as shown at 17, and then pass around pulleys 18 on the end of the shaft 1, then around pulleys 19, secured upon the sides of the car-body, and are then secured to the ends of a transverse bar 20, secured to the front of the track and forming substantially a part thereof. When the car-body is in its horizontal position, these cables hold the gate back to the car-body and confine the material therein; but when the car-body is tilted forward the chains are relaxed, since the pulleys 19 move nearer to the ends of the bar 20, and thus the gate swings open by it momentum and also by gravity.
.In the claims the word cable includes a chain or other equivalent.
I claim-- 1. In a dumping-car, a combination of a truck, a car-body tilting thereon, a swinging gate closing the front end of said car-body, a cable secured at its ends to said gate and to the frame, parts carried by said frame and car-body around which the cable passes, the position of the parts being such that when the car-body is tilted the cable is relaxed to allow the gate to swing open, substantially as described.
2. In a dumping-car, a combination of a truck, a car-body tilting thereon, a swinging gate closing the front end of said car-body, and a cable engaging the frame, the gate, and the car-body at points relatively so situated that, on the forward tilting of the ear-body the cable is relaxed to permit the gate to swing open, substantially as described.
3. In a dumping-car, a combination of a truck, a car-body tilting thereon, a swinging gate closing the front end of said car-body, a
latch holding said car-body to a horizontal position, means for releasing said latch, said means including an element adapted to impinge against a suitable abutment, a pulley on the end of the shaft, a pulley on the side of the car-body, and a cable passing around said pulleys and having its ends secured to the gate and to a forward portion of the frame, whereby on the tilting of the car-body the cable is relaxed to allow the gate to open, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. KELLY. Witnesses:
FRANCIS M. WRIGHT, BESSIE GOR'FINKEL.
