To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, LEVI J ASON LEWIS, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Dump-Oars; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of cars in which the load is dis charged by opening the bottom of the car.
It consists of apeculiar construction and arrangement of the bottom of the car, which is formed in one or more sections, and has a dragrope tongue connected with it, and, in combination with this, springs and holding arms or trips, and a means for automatically opening the trips, so as to allow the bottom of the car to fall and discharge its load.
It further consists of certain details of construction, all of which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of thedumpcar, track, and the timbers for tripping. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the car. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section otacar with single bottom.
A A represent the body or sides of the car having wheels B, which travel upon the track, and G is the bottom of the car. This bottom may be hinged in one or two sections, a single set of hinges at the front end for single'bottom. If in two sections, the front section will be hinged at the front of the car and the rear section to a transverse beam at about the center of the car, as shown in Fig. 4.
Beneath or on the sides of the bottom of the car is fastened the bent tongue D, to which the drag-rope is attached and by which the car is let down the inclined track to the point where it is to be unloaded. The tongue is bent upward to such an angle that the tension upon the rope tends to raise the bottom upward and close the car, and when closed the car-bottom is held by the springs and trips E, which are secured to the sides of the car-body, as shown, and have the lower portion of trips turned at right angles, so as to project beneath the bottom of the car, thus holding it up in place when the load is placed in it. of the drag-rope until it arrives at the point where it is to be dumped or discharged. At this points are posts with bars G placed longitudinally with and above each side of the track, and so placed with relation to the car that the upper ends of the trip'levers and the springs pass between the posts and bars G, which, moving the trip-levers and springs in against the sides of the car, will correspondingly withdraw the trips or holding projections from beneath the bottom until the bottom is allowed to swing upon its hinges, and thus discharge its load. As soon as tension is brought to bear upon the rope to drag the car up the incline again, it acts to close the bot tom, and when the car is moved forward from between the posts and bars G the trips pass beneath the bottom as soon as the springs are relieved,thus holding the bottom firmly in place for another load. \Vhen the car-bottom is divided into two sections, 0 O, as shown in Fig. 4,the front part will be closed by the springs and trips in the same manner as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The rear part, 0, of the bottom (shown in Fig. 4) rests upon a roller, Z, on the rear end of a pivoted bent arm, m, whose upper front end is connected with the bent tongue D by a connectingbar, it. By this means the rear part, 0, of the bottom opens and closes simultaneously with the front portion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The dump-car having the bottom hinged to the ear-body, the bent tongue attached to the bottom and having a drag-rope connected with it, so as to close the bottom when strain is brought to bear upon the rope, in combina tion with springs and trips, the latter extending vertically down the sides of the car and be- I neath the bottom and holding it in place after it is closed, substantially as herein described. 2. The dump-car having the bottom formed in sections, the frontedges of which are hinged to the car-body, a bent tongue attached to the bottom and having the drag-rope attached to it, in combination with the spring-arms extending horizontally along the sides of the car, and the trips projecting therefrom vertically and beneath the bottom, so as to hold it when closed, substantially as herein described.
