UN ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE IV. DIOKINSON, OF BUTTE CITY, MONTANA.
DUMPING-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,073, dated July 29, 1890.
Application filed August 6, 1888. Serial No. 282,042. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Dickinson, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and Territory of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Cars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in hopper-cars and cars that discharge their own load, used for hauling or handling ore, gravel,
y broken stone, and all material of a like character. Great inconvenience has been experienced from the ordinary side-dump cars where used for transporting ore, coal, dre., mainly due to the complex nature of the apparatus used in dumping them-such as chains, levers, gear-wheels, dief-not able to withstand the rough usage to which cars in this service are subject to. It is necessary that cars for this service should be of simple design and of substantial construction.
The objects of my invention are, Iirst, to provide a side-chute hopper-car of improved eonstructioinfroni which the contents or load is discharged from the same by gravity; second, to furnish a car with inclines and its side doors with simple and substantial fastenings. I attain these objects by the arrangement,
construction, and combination of parts, as
illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whieh Figure l is a plan of a car constructed in accordance with my invention. One half shows the framing of the same, and one half shows the floored inelines. Fig. 2 represents the same, partly in side elevation and partly in vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the side-chute doors, with hinges, latches, ttc., for the saine. Fig. d is a vertical cross-section showing the sidechute inclines and the manner in which they are constructed. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the car, Fig. G is a front viewof the latchbar detached from the car. Fig. 7 is a side view of one of the door-props for holding a door open at such times as may be required. Fig. 8 is a side View of a wrench for operating the door-latches. p
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
D are transverse or distance sills framed to the side sills A and center sills B.
D is a distance-block framed to the center sills B.
The car-frame is to be tied near the distance-sills D by cross-rods. Auxiliary sills E are framed to the distance-sills D and to the end sills O.
The body-bolster, draw-timbers, draw-bars, tbc., may be attached to the car in the ordinary manner. I
The car has three transverse or needlebeams, a center one G, and one G nearer each end of the car. The distance the needle-beams are placed apart will be governed by the wheel-base of the truck and the distance the body-bolster is placed from the end of the car. Side planks Il are secured to side stakes I and I', placed directly on top 0f the side sill A, ilush with the outside face thereof and secured to the same with bolts and rods. The center stakes I are secured to the side sillon the inside of side plank lI and braced to the car-frame by the brace-rod I2. The side stakes I are secured to the side sill on the outside of side planks. Il is a running-board secured between the side stakes I on each side of the car, to extend the full length of the side planks ll and secured to the side sill A with brackets.
At each end of the car there is an incline J, extending from the top of the side planks H to the lower line of the ear-sills A and B. The inclined floor-timbers J are framed at their lower end to the needle-beam G, and also rest upon the distance-sills D. The upper end of the Hoor-timbers J are carried by a frame K, which is secured to the car-sills A, B, and E with rods and bolts. A ridgepiece L extends longitudinally through the center of the car to the outside of the end inclined frames K, and rests upon three saddleblocks L', which are fastened to the center sills B, and the ridge-piece L is fastened to the saddle-blocks L. The side-incline chute O consists of two corner-posts O and one center post o, framed to the needle-beams G and G at the upper end and to the side floor-sill IOO length of the side chute and are secured ontop of the needle-beams G and G. The whole construction is supported and fastened to the car by the strap N, which is fastened to the side-chute frame and side sill of the car. The
A side inclines O extend from the longitudinal ridge-piece L at the center of the car to the outside face of the side inclined floor-sill M. The end inclines J and side inclines O are covered with flooring of suitable thickness. When the cars are designated for transporting material of a moist and adhering natu-re, the flooring on the inclines may be covered with sheet iron or steel, put on in plates of a suitable size and shape to suit the size and angle of the inclines.
v The openings of the side chutes O, from which the contents of the car are discharged, are provided with doors P, made to swing outward, and hinged to side sill of the car by the hinge-straps p, p', and p2, and the hingerod Q. In accordance with my invention the doors are to be secured, when closed, by a latch or catch near each end and also by a center fastener.
R are latches pivoted on wrought-iron pins fr, and supported by the pivot castings 7", which are secured to the side-chute braces. The side-chute braces and posts are slotted to receive the latches R.
R is a latch-bar bolted on the outside face of the door. The latch-bar R' has av slot or notch 'r2 cut in its upper edge near each end, into which the latches R drop when the doors are closed.
S is a latch-shaft resting in the bearings S', which are bolted to or otherwise secured to the side sill A. The latch-shaft S is squared at each end to receive the wrench s' by which the latches R are operated.
s are arms fastened to the latch-shaft S directly over the latches R.
T are latch-connecting rods, one end of which is attached to the arms s and t and the opposite end to the latches R and t'. Each end of the latch-shaft S is squared to receive the wrench s', by which the latches R are operated, as hereinafter described.
The center fastening is made by the pin U, secured on the lower side of the inclined chute-frame, projecting through the hole p3 posts, (one to each door,) and the door-holder bar V' is pivoted to the casting V. holder bar V' is formedl with an offset or shoulder at c. When the doors are closed, the holder-bai-V rests over the latch-bar R', so that when the doors are opened the holderbar V' is carried along with said doors far enough to allow the shoulder o in the holderbar V' to drop over the upper edge of the latch-bar R', thereby forming a brace which holds the door open.
When the cars are loaded with ore, coal, broken stone, or any vmaterial of a heavy nature, the weight of the same against the doors is sufficient (the latches being released) to force them open a sufficient distance for the door-holder bar to catch automatically and hold the door open, thereby keeping the weight of the door off the material that is heing unloaded, and thus allowing all of same to get out of the car.
When the cars are loaded with sawdust, charcoal, or any material of a light character, and the weight of the same is not sufficient to force the doors open after the latches and fastenings are released, the crook s2, formed on the end of thc wrench s', is placed over The doorv the latch-bar R' near either end and the doors pulled open far enough to allow the shoulder t in the holder-bar V' to drop over the upper edge of the latch-bar R', thus holding the doors open until the car is unloaded.
To open` the side-chute doors, first, the center fastening is to be released by removing the key U' from the pin U, and, second, to remove the latches R out of the notches 'r2 in the ends of the latch-bar R. The wrench s' is placed on the squared end of the latch-shaft S, and by turning the same upward the arms s are lifted, and being connected to the latches R by the latch-connecting rods T also lifts the latches out of the notches r2 in the latch-bar R', allowing the door to swing outward.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim- 1. In a dumping-car having a ridge-piece and ltwo lateral discharge-openings and doors therefor, the combination of the latch-bar R', the center hinge-strap p2, and the pin U, with the key U', forming a center fastening, and horizontal latches R, engaging with the top edge o-f the latch-bar, substantially as and for thc purpose described.
2. The door-holder pivot-casting V and the door-holder bar V', in combination with the latch-bar R', whereby the door is kept open, substantially as and the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
