RELEASING DEVICE TRAM-CAR DOORS.

To all w hm it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. NOTTER, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Releasing Detram-way and at certain points on the line it wheel truck, and its side walls A A are hinged is desired to discharge the contents of .the cars automatically, thus dispensing with manual attendance andoperation; and my invention is designed to furnish a simple and efficient means -for releasing the bolts which confine the pivoted or swinging doors, forming the sides of the tram-car, automatically, by contact with a stationary block or tripping device loc ated along the. line of track.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a broken side elevation, and Fig. 2 a transverse sectional-view, of a tram-car having applied thereto my improvements. 7
The car is usually mounted upon a four rods B. The car'C has a keeper D secured thereto, and a vertically moving locking bolt E, which is confined to move through the keepers F, its lower end droppinginto keeper D to lock the door. The sides of the car are flared outwardly, and, therefore, when the bolt is released the door will swing. open by gravity to the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig.2. Now, in order to release the locking bolt, I pivot a lever G thereto, said lever being pivoted as at g to the sides of the car and between its ends to the upright or vertical bar H. Said bar projects below the bottom of the car, and preferably carries upon its end a roller h, which is adapted to strike a stop wedge or block I, fixed in proper position along the line of track. The bar H may be confined in'position by the keepers which confine the locking bolt, and it preferably has pivotally connected thereto at its upper end a hand lever J, pivoted on the side of the car and by which the locking bolt may be raised in position to enter its keeper in fastening the door inthe closed position. In
operation, however, the device is rendered automatic by the engagement of the antifriction roller on the end of the vertical slidable bar with the stop wedge fixed along the line of track at the position where it is desired to dump the load. The car may, therefore, be sent on its circuit loaded, and when it passes over the stop wedge the fastening bolt will be released from its keeper and the door will swing'out or be forced out by the load, and the latter will be' dischargedwithout interrupting the progress of the car or manual attendance. The door remains open until the car approaches the loading station when it will be closed by an attendant.
While the construction of the several parts may be varied, and while the invention may be applied to many forms of tram cars, I consider the means herein shown as the best known to me.
1. A releasing device. for the fastenings of tram-car doors, comprising inLcombination with a swinging door, a slidable bolt mounted ,thereon, a keeper for said bolt arranged adjacent to the free edge of thedoor, a lever pivotally connected to the bolt and to the body of the car, a slidable bar pivotally connected to said lever and projected below the car and a fixed obstruction or tripping block arranged along the way and with whichthe sliding bar is adapted to engage, substantially as described.
2. In means for releasing the fastenings of tram-car doors, the combination with a slidable bolt mounted on the door, a keeper secured to the frame ofthe car adjacent thereto, a lever pivoted to the bolt and to the side of the car, a vertically slidable barpivotally connected to said lever and having its end projected below the carand 'providedwith a roller, a hand lever pivoted to the car and to said bar, and a tripping block fixed along the line of way and adapted to engage the roller, substantially as described.
