UNMEB STAR@ Sina JOSEPH M. DRUECKER, OF STONE CITY, IOWA.
Application filed June 30, 1916. Serial No. 106,767.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Josnrir M. Dnnnonnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stone City, in the county of J ones and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful limprovements in Auton'iatie Dumping and Righting Mechanisms for Tilt-able Dump-Cars; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The present invention relates to` new and useful vimprovements in tiltable dump cars, and is more particularly directed to the provision of means for procuring dumping movements of such cars.
lt is primarily the object of the invention to provide a means for automatically dumping tiltable cars upon their reaching a certain desired position, and for automatically righting the cars upon their being moved away from said dumping position.
lt is more specifically an object to provide an automatic dumping means so associated with the cars that the cars are normally held "1 against possible accidental tilting.
It is still further an object to Yprovide an automatic dumping mechanism of the present nature Which is of exceedinglysimple structure and which may be associated Awith various types of dump cars now in common use with but very slight modification of the structure thereof.
W ith the above and other objects and advantages in View the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, ar-
rangement and formation of parts more particularly hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. y
Figurel 1 is a side elevational view of a tilting railway dump' car, having the improved automatic dumping and righting mechanism associated therewith. v
F i g. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. y
F 3 is a detailed sectional view showing a trip member, this view being indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates each of a pair of rails on which is mounted a tiltn ing side dump car of the type commonly used in conveying earth or like material and l which comprises the Wheeled base frame 6 provided With a longitudinal series of pivot bearings 7 for plvotally mounting the car Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 5, 1917.
body 8. The usual means of holding the car body against tilting is by chains secured to the sides of the body and to the sides of the base frame, and to adapt the car for use in connection with the present automatic dumping' mechanism, only the chains at the side of the car body at which it is desired to dump are retained, these chains being designated at 9. To provide a clearance for aportion of the automatic dumping mechanism, the lever mechanism for opening the opposite side of the car is also removed, the lever mechanism at the dump side of the car, designated at 10, being retained.
To hold the lifting side of the car against upward tilting' movement, in a manner providing for the ready automatic release of said side of the car, a U-shaped link member 11 pivotally depends from the central portion of said side of the car, and has its bight ei'igageable in a hook plate 12 carried by the adjacent side of the base flange 6. This link is normally held in engagement With the hook by a retractile spring 13 secured to the car side and to the intermediate portion of the link, and the link is held against undesired swinging movement by this spring when disengaged from the hook, by a chain 14 secured thereto and to the car side. The top of the hook plate 12 is inclined down- Wardly toward the hook opening and thus provides for an automatic locking engag ment of the link with the hook upon swinging movement of the car body back to righted position.
F or automatically dumping the car, the lifting side of the forward end thereof carries a laterally projected dumping arm 15 which is engageable with an upwardly inclined beam 16 disposed along the track and the holding link 11 is released immediately prior to the engagement of the dumping arm with the inclined beam by means of a trip arm 17 which is pivotally mounted on an upstanding shaft 18, this shaft being preferably secured at its lower end to the lower end of the inclined beam 16 and secured at its upper end to a horizontal bracket arm '19 carried by said beam, a second bracket arm 20 having a seating recess 21 at its end being engageable with the intermediate portion of the trip member to hold it for proper engagement With the link. By this structure the bar may be swung out of the Way when not in use, to permit the passage o-f ordinary traflic over the rails, it being understood that the inclined dumping beam and the righting beam later to be described are spaced suliiciently from the rails toprovide a proper clearance for traflic.
Thus, to automatically dump the car, it is moved toward the dumping beam and trip bar, and the trip bar engages the lever and swings it from the hook to release the body of the car for tilting movement. The dump arm l5 then engages the inclined beam 16 and rides upwardly thereon to dump the car.
.For righting` the car, an arm Q2 projects laterally from the depressing side of the rear endof the car, and this arm, when the car is tilted, is adapted to engage an inclined righting beam 23 disposed along the track.
In the structure illustrated the righting beam 23 is disposed to the rear of the car in its dumping position, and inclined downwardly toward the dumping beam. Thus upon the car being moved to dumping position, and then moved backwardly, a righting of the car body will be effected.
From the foregoing` it is seen that an exceedingly simple arrangement has been procured whereby tilting dump cars may be dumped, and righted automatically, upon movement of the cars toward and awal f from a desired dumping position.
The preferable method of securing the vertical leg of the inclined righting beam 16 is by bolting said leg to the extended end of a transverse rail 2li disposed under the track rails 5 and connected therewith by suitable gripping dogs 25, an exceedingly rigid structure being thus procured.
Ihile I have described my present invention for use in connection with side dump cars, and adapted to dump said cars and right them uponmovement forwardly and rearwardly with respect to a certain position, it is obvious that in as much as the essential feature of my invention resides in the provision of dumping and righting means disposed at opposite sides of the pivotal axis of a car, and a releasing means operative prior to engagement of the car with the dumping means, various structures embodying this essential feature may be provided without departing from the spirit of the present invention as interpreted by the accompanying claims.
I claim:
l. The combination with a track way and a tilting car on said track way, of releasable Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, v
means holding said car against tilting, a projection at one side of the tilting axis of the car, aninclined member valong the track way engageable by said projection, and a member along the Jcrack way and adapted to operatively engage said releasable holding means prior to-the engagement of said projection with the inclined member.
2. The combination with a track way and a tilting car on said track way including a base frame and a tilting body of a link pivoted to the body at one side of its tilting axis, a holding member on the base frame engageable by said link to hold the body against tilting, a projection at said side of the body, an inclined member engageable by said proj ection and a trip member engageable by the link prior to engagement of said projection with the inclined member.
3. The combination with a track way and a car including a base frame and a tilting body of a link pivoted to one side of the body, a hook on the adjacent side of the frame having its top portion beveled, means limiting pivotal movement of the link member, a spring urging said link member to its limit of pivotal movement, a projection on said side of the car body, an inclined member engageable by said projection, and a trip member engageable by the link to release it prior to the engagement of the projection and inclined member.
4. The combination with a track way and a tilting car on said trackway including` a base frame and a tilting body of a link pivoted to 'the body at one side of its tilting axis, a holding member on the base frame engageable by said link to hold the body' against tilting, a projection at said side of the body, an inclined member engageable by said projection a trip member engageable by the link prior to engagement of said projection with the inclined member, a projection on the opposite side. of the car body and an inclined member along the track way engageable by the said projection.
In testimony that I claim the f regoing I have hereunto set my hand at Stone City, in the county of Jones and State of Iowa, in the presence of two witnesses.
