Description

(No Model.)
W. G. DAVIS.
ORB GAR. No. 552,750. Patented Jan. 7, 1896.
INVENTOR W1 TNESSES v BY ajfmdmtb I. ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
\VILLIAM C. DAVIS, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
ORE-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters I'atent No. 552,750, dated January '7, 1896.
Application filed August 7, 1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ore-Oars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an ore-car provided with an automatically-operated door which is adapted to be opened when the car is dumped, and while I have shown the invention in connection with an ore-car I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to this use, as it may be found equally useful and desirable in connection with other cars.
My invention includes a dumping-car provided with a door at one end and with lever connections from said door to the base upon which the car swings, whereby the dumping or tilting of the car operates to open the door.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ore-car with the parts in normal position, and Fig. 2 is aview of the same car, showing it as dumped with the door open. Fig. 3 is a modification.
The car shown at 1 represents a type of any form of dumping-car, being provided with a handle 19 at the rear to facilitate the operation of the car, and particularly for returning it to normal position. The truck shown at 2 has a catch at one end pivoted at t and having a hook adapted to engage a slotted plate or fixed to the car and depending therefrom. The hook has an extending portion or and is kept in engagement with the slotted plate 17. by a spring 0. By depressing the end m the car is released and may be dumped. The truck 2 is provided with a turn-table, and hinged to one end of this turn-table is the car, the hinged connection being shown at 8. The turn-table is provided with a bearing-point a to support the car at the side opposite its pivot, and extendin g across the top of the turn-table is a bar or plate having turned-up ends a, each of which is provided with a projectin g pin 1). The vertical posts a are placed at a distance apart a little in excess of the width of the car, so that the car may be in its normal position located between them. A rod extends across under the car forming a pivot d, and to this rod on each side is pivoted a bell-crank lever 0, having one end slot- $eria1II0. 558,473- (No modell) ted and engaging the pins 22, while the opposite end is connected by along link 6 with the door '9, being pivoted thereto at f, the door being pivoted at its upper end at h.
The operation will be obvious, and it will be seen that as the car is dumped, as shown in Fig. 2, the bell-crank lever 0 will assume the position shown by reason of its engagement with the stationary pin 1) and the door will be swung open. As the car is brought back to normal position, the door will be closed and the construction is such that the door is practically locked and can only be opened in the dumping of the car.
Byreason of the turn-table construction the car may be dumped from either side or end of the truck.
As shown in Fig. 3, the operating parts may be modified by interposing a link a, between the end of the bell-crank and the base instead of the pin-and-slot connection. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In combination with a dumping car, a swinging door, a bell-crank mounted on said car, and pivotally connected with said door, and an operating connection between said bell-crank and the truck, substantially as described.
2. In a dumping car, a swinging door, a bellcrank lever, a link between one arm of said lever and the door, vertical posts on the truck having projecting pins, the opposite end of said bell-crank levers engaging said pins, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a dumping car, a swinging door pivoted at its upper end to the end of said car, the truck, the link e pivotally connected at one of its ends to said door, the bell crank having one of its arms connected to the free end of said link, said bell crank being pivoted below the bottom of the car and 9 5 in presence of two witnesses.
