F. S. RUSSELL.-

APPLICATION FILED OCT. 16. 1917.

FREDERICK SAUNDERS RUSSELL, 0F GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
creAEETTE AND CIGAR cAsE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 30, 1919.
Application filed October 16, 1917. Serial No. 196,876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SAUNDEEs RUSSELL, of 1 Argyll Arcade, in the county of the city of Glasgow, Scotland, eweler and manufacturing goldsmith, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Connected with Cigarette and Cigar Cases, of which the followmg 1s a specification. My invention relates to improvements 1n and connected with cigarette and cigar cases of the kind where the removal of a cigarette or cigar from the case is facilitated by the use of a frame inside the case and connected thereto, and which frame can be tilted by the finger or through the medium of a spring to expose the cigarettes, and the object of my invention is to simplify such construction.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a suitably shaped framework having a flat rest at one end thereof. This framework is suitably pivoted or hinged near the opposite end to the sides of the case. The cigarettes or cigars are placed in the case in the usual manner and lie at one end on the flat rest. When it is desired to remove a cigarette or cigar from the case, one end of the framework is pressed down by the finger or thumb, which action causes the other or flat rest end to rise, and wlth it the cigarettes or cigars, thereby exposing them insuch a manner that one can be readily removed without in any way interfering with the others. When a cigarette or cigar has been extracted, the finger or thumb is withdrawn, and the framework automatically returns to its normal position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a cigarette case, in which the parts are so constructed that the cigarettes will be firmly held against dropping out of the frame, when such frame is rocked, so that the ends of the cigarettes are readily accessible to the hand.
One of the above arrangements may be provided on each half of the case.
In order that my invention may be properly understood and readily carried into effect, I have hereunto appended one sheet of drawings, of which Figure 1 is a plan of the cigarette or cigar case opened, made in accordance with and constituting my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the case also opened taken on the line a, b, of Fig. 1. The dotted lines show the lever or frame in the raised position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the lever or frame acted upon at one end thereof by the finger in order'to raise the cigarettes or cigars for removal, all hereafter more fully referred to and described.
Referring to the drawings, A is the case. B is the lever or frame. E-F are the pivots or fulcrums mounted in the dome of the case at opposite points thereof. I are the cigarettes carried or supported on the lever or frame B aforesaid.
The lever B consists of a hollow rectangular frame having two arms B B cranked or bent so that their under surface for the main portion of their length lies near to or rests on the dome or roof of the case. The rear end of the lever or frame is so arranged that it lies with its edge on a level with the edges of the open case, as seen in Fig. 2. The arms at opposite oints are formed with eyes C, D, for the pivots E, F, upon which the lever or frame turns. The transverse pieces G, H, form part of the frame, H being of a flat bar formation and G of tray formation, with its under surface shaped to the contour of the dome or roof A of the case A against which it lies. In position, the cigarettes or the like I are carried on the tray with their ends projecting beyond the end of tray, and their opposite ends lying against and abutting the aforesaid bar end of the frame, which arrangement facilitates the removal of a cigarette or cigar.
A resilient band J is provided, having its ends secured to the frame A, such points of fastening being located directly above the pivots E, F.
. It will be obvious in operation that upon rocking the frame to the position shown in Fig. 3, the edge of the band J will engage the cigarettes and prevent their dropping out of the frame by their own initiative.
Although only one part of the case is shown fitted with the lever or frame, it is to 5 be understood that the improvements are applicable to both parts or pockets.
Claim: 7 v I A cigarette case including two half sections hinged together, a cigarette carrying 10 frame for one section, such cigarette carrying frame being pivoted to. the said section,
above the pivots, 15
In testimony whereof I have aifixed my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
