IMPROVEMENT IN PORTFOLIOS.

' Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,473, dated September 17,1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL SLoTE, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portfolios 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists of an artists companion, composed of a base-board, having a drawing-pad, a hinged portfolio for keeping the pad clean and holding drawings, and a box to contain artists7 materials, &c., which is provided with a perforated offset, to

- which are attached wire sketch-holders, all as hereinafter set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, of my device. Fig. 3 shows the`back of the same.

A represents the base or bed of the artists companion, made of pasteboard, thin wood, or other suitable material. Upon this is fastened the drawing-pad B, containing any desired number of sheets for the artist to make his sketches on. When this is used up it can readilybe renewed. C represents a portfolio, fastened on one side to the base A by rubber bands a, or any other suitable means 5 and iastened on the opposite side by a button, b, or other device. This portfolio answers the double purpose of keeping the pad clean and of holding the drawings or sketches. In front of the pad is a box, D, to contain drawing or artists material. E E are wires or sketchholders, to be placed in holes fit' on a shoulder or offset, d, formed along the back of the box D. The sketch for copy is to be placed between the wires, and the wires may be adjusted to accommodate a small or large sketch.

When the sketch-holders are not in use they may be kept in the box.

4 I do not broadly claim an artists companion composed of a base with a portfolio attached, and having a receptacle for artists materials, as I am aware that such is not new.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture, the withindescribed artists companion, consisting of the base A, pad B, portfolio C, hinged to the base by rubber bands a a, and fastened over the pad by a button, b, the box D with its perforated offset d, and the sketch-holders E E, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
