. IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,447, dated September 17, 1872.
and useful Improvement in Sp1-in g-Bed or Bed- Foundations; and do hereby declare the same v to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2 an end view, Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a transverse section, of a spring-bed or bed-foundation provided with my invention.
In such drawing, A denotes a frame composed of two long bars, a a, and two shorter bars, b b, arranged as shown, each of the shorter bars being mortised or slotted, as represented at c a c in Fig. 5, which denotes a side View of one of such bars. The said mortises of the two bars are to receive tenons d formed upon each slat of a series of elastic wooden slats, B B B. Extending across the frame A from one to the other of its bars a a, and hooked upon both of them and also extending underneath the several slats B B B, is a movable support-bar, C, such bar being adjustable on the bars a a-or, in other words, capable of being readily moved on the bars a a toward either of the bars b b. Each tenon of each of the slatsB extends through its mortise and fits loosely thereto, so as to enable the slat to spring up and down, as occasion may require. By moving the support bar C either toward or away from one of the bars b b the elasticity of the slats may be increased or diminished-Ia matter of much advantage.
I sometimes interpose Aone or more springs between the slats and the adjustable cross-bar, such being to support the slats upon.V or by such spring or springs, and it or them by the cross-bar.
I am aware of the springbed foundation described in the United States Patent No. 36,425), and make no claim thereto, the transverse bar in such spring-bed not being` adjustable, as is the case in my bed-foundation, in which each slat is also free to move lengthwise at each end, whereby the wear is distributed over two of the tenons instead of being coniined to one only, as would be the case were one fastened to the frame A and the other left free to slide lengthwise thereon. Furthermore the adjust able cross-bar is not so placed as to bow the slats, but is on a level with or below their supporting-mortises.
I make no claim to a spring-bed constructed as shown, described in the United States Patent No. 52,426, dated February 6, 1866, and granted to Thomas Linfoot.
I claim- In the bed-foundation or spring-bed composed of the frame A, the series of slats B and the support-bar C, arranged as described, the said bar C applied to the frame A so as to be adjustable or movable thereon, in manner and with respect to the slats B, movable at both ends of each, or with respect to the frame,
as specified.
