Description

J. B. LOOMIS.
Improvement in Headstall Overchecks.
No. 131,284, Patenfed sep.1o,1*872.
FFIGE.
JAMES B. LOOMIS, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELFAND FRANCIS P. BOGARDUS, OF SAME PLACE.
IViPRQVEfENT IN ,HEAD-STALL GVERCHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. hSL-, dated September 10, 1872.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnnns B. Looms, of Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and Sta-te of Michi gan, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Fair-Leader Attachment to Head-Stall Overchecks; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters 0f reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which my invention is shown in perspective with one of the leaders opened.
The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in fair-leaders for the check-reins of that class which pass over the top of the headstall and known as overchecks77 The invention consists in the construction of hinged malleable iron or metal airleaders in lieu of the stationaryr rings or loops heretofore used, so that the checklines may be removed from the head-stall when desired.
In the drawing, AV represents a metallic plate, two of which are secured to the crossstrap B. The plate is cast with a semicircular groove extending across it, to one side of which, as at d, a semicircnlar cap, A', is hinged. When the cap is shut down to embrace the rounded body of the checkrein G, it is secured by a screw, b, passing through it into the plate A.
Heretoforc, after the head-stall and overlcheck were finished, it was impossible to dev tach the latter without ripping oft the loops which these fair-leaders replace, or cutting the line, or removing the buckle, if the loops were large enough to pass the ilat part of the rein. W ith my ilnprovement the cap A may be opened by withdrawing its holding-screw b, and the check renewed or replaced when required without tronble. 1f made of malleable inet-al they are strong, neat, convenient, and easily secured to the head-.stall by riveting.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The fair-leader, composed of the parts A A', hinged together as shown, and secured by the screw b, substantially as described.
