Description

F.-KERN.
Shaft Socket. No. 123,915. l Patented Fb. 20,187.2.
EL Ven faz' PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK KERN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHAFT-SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,915, dated February 20, 1872.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK KERN, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, haveinvented anew and Improved Shaft-Socket 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, referencebeing had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective, showing a part of the shaft in position. Fig. 2 is a. vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference in dicate like parts. The nature of myinvention relates to a shaftsocket, wherein a buckle fastening the backstrap is combined with the main part of the socket, which is made of some rigid material or metal and lined with leather or other suitable material. It consists in an oval ring of sufficient sizeto admit the shaft, being provided at the top with a self-closin g buckle, and at the bottom with a square link, to which the strap is connected which buckles to the belly-band.
Among' the advantages I claim for my invention may be mentioned the ease with which the shafts may be placed in position, and the cheapness and simplicityY of the device, as well as the general security afforded to the rider.
In construction my invention is as follows:
A is the oval-shaped ring admitting the shaft B. At C is a link into which is fastened the strap holding the belly-band D. The strap F which presses against part c of buckle E holds the same in a closed stateautomatically. The buckle E consists of a metallic plate, c, provided with two ears, e1, which receive a rivet passing through the body of the buckle, thus fastening the plate to the ring A, and at the same time forming a joint. At c2 is seen a projection, which passes through a hole in the strap H and'enters the ring A through a hole, a. In order to present a soft material to the shaft to prevent wear and noise, I provide the lower part of the interior of ring A with a leather lining, G, which ts snugly into a groove left for that purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A combined socket and buckle, composed of the ring A and the pivoted buckle-'plate e, provided with the stud c2, arranged to shut into an orifice in the ring A, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
. FREDERICK KERN.
