COMBINED y sIeN AND' issUIariErIIr sonni).`
Application filed `August 24, 1918.` Serial No. 251,334.
To all whom t may concern: i
Be it known that I, FRED H. LovELnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Signand Bulletin Board, of which the `following is a specification.` y i This invention relates to a combined sign and daily bulletin board; and one ofthe objects of the invention consists in the provision of a combined sign and bulletin board of the above character whereby the privilege for locating and maintaining the boards can be paid for by the allotment of `certain bulletin display space, so that the lessee can display from day to day suoli produce as he has for Sale and also the commodities he desires to buy, andthereby avoid annoy` ances and loss of time on part of boththe buyer and seller in promoting and carrying out merchantable transactions, besides facilitating the extension and maintenance of the display of permanent advertising matter.
A further object of the invention consists in the provision of acombinedadvertising display Sign and daily bulletin board which is simple in construction and cheap to manueiiac-ture.
l accomplish the above objects of the iiivention, `and such others as may appear Vtrom a perusal o1 the following specification and claims, by means oi' the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved advertising display sign and bulletin board. Fig. 2 is a vertical Sectional view through the board. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail vertical sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of the board. Fig, Il is a fragmentary detail vertical sectional view of a modified form of construction of my improved sign and bulletin board.
Referring to the drawings, 10 and 11 represent a pair of parallel upright members which form the sides of the sign-frame, and the members 10 and 11 may extend suiiioieiitly below the display board as to form posts to be let into the ground for holding the sign board erect without additional bracing. The upper ends of the members 10 and 11 are connected by means of a top-rail 12 forming the upper member of the signrame, and the lower portions of members Specicaton of Letters Patent.
"frame, and bulletin for jdiately below the permanent for sale sign Patented July 1,1919.
10` and `11 are connected together by means of a tie-rail 15.` Members 10 and 11, and the top-rail 12 are usually provided with. a centrally located and longitudinally extending groove or` lrerf 16. The continuous channel formedby groove 16 `in the members 10 `and 11 and. top-rail 12 forms a seat for the `reception of the bulletin board 18 which is arranged in the upper portion of the signboard 18 is preferably formed of sheet metal. Asnoted the bulletin display surface of the board 18 may be divided, as at 19, and the areas of therespective divided portions of said board. may be suitably and permanently designated as sale and"wanted. The space iinmeon bulletin board 18 may be utilized by the lessee of the sign privilege for the purpose of displaying such produce as he may` have for sale at that time to the huclster and the passers-by, and on that portion of the board 18 immediately belowthe permanent sign wantedhe can display suoli commodi ties as he desires to" buy, so that, anyone desiring to purchase any of the commodities displayed for sale will not be embarrassed by making inquiries,` and relates equally to `those who have commodities for sale. `The articles designated for sale or the commodities desired to be purchased which are displayed on the daily bulletin board 18 will usually @be written in by chalk so as to en,-
able the same to be readily removed when it is desired to Change the wording ofthe bulletin. `As chalk is not permanent in character,
prevent the permanent portion of the display board 25 from being streaked and marred `by the chalk water draining down from bulletin board 18` I provide an iiiclined water-table 26 along the upper edge oi board 25 so that as water discharges from the lower edge of bulletin board 18 it strikes the inclined `surface of water-table 26 and is conveyed thereby rearwardly and back of board 25. As the permanent board 25 is usually made of sheet metal, watertable 26 may easily be bent out of the metal sheet extending along the marginal edge of board 25, and the free edge of water-table 26 may be strengthened or reinforced by adding a bead 27 which may be formed by bending the metal edge baci; against the it may be readily removed eitherV manually or by ram. Therefore, 1n order to` surface of the water-table, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The ends of the bent portion of water-table 26 will usually be bent downwardly to form the depending ears 28 and serve to anchor the upper portion of board 25 to the adjacent sides of upright members 10 and 11, by means `of suitable nails 29. The lower edge of board 25 is usually nailed fast to the outer face of tie-rail 15 so that such water as may be driven against the front surface of board 25 will readily be drained away.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown rail 15 extending forwardly to the front edges of side members 10- and 11, and in this instance tie-rail 15 is also provided with a lrerf 16 to receive the lower edge of board 25, and the forward upper surface of tierail 15 in advance of boa-rd 25 is beveled, as shown, so as to freely carry away the water as itis discharged from the face of board 25.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A combined sign and bulletin board comprising a frame, a sign board composed vof two or more sections with an air gap bctween the edges of the sections, and a watertable arranged along the upper edgey of the lower section for protecting the- `latter against the water drained from the upper section of the sign board.
2. A combined sign and bulletin board comprising a frame, a sign board composed of two display sections with an air gap between their adjacent edges, and an inclined water-table arranged, along the` upper edge of the lower section for catching anddischarging the water drained from the upper section back of the sign board.
3. A combined sign and bulletin board comprising a frame, a sign board composed of two display sections with an air gap between their adjacent edges, `an inclined water-table arranged along the upper edge of the lower section for catching and discharging the water drained from the upper section back of the sign board, and ears formed of the ends of the water-table, and means for securing the ears to the sign frame.
4. A combined sign and bulletin board comprising a frame, a sign board composed of two sections with an air gap between their adjacent edges, and an inclined water table arranged in the air gap for conveying the water discharged from the upper sign section away from the lower sign section.
5. A combined. sign and bulletin board comprising a frame, a sign board composed of two sections with an air gap between their adjacent edges, an inclined water-table arranged in the air gap for conveying the water discharged from the upper sign section away from the lower sign section, and means for reinforcing the free edge of the water-table.
6. A combined sign and bulletin board comprising a frame composed of a plurality of connected sections having` con'mnlnicating kerfs, a display board composed of a plura-lity of disconnected sections arranged with a channel formed by said kerfs` and a water-table arranged in the space between the opposed edges of the sign sections, for conveying away the water draining from the upper sections from the lower sign sections.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 14th day of August, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and eighteen.
