Be it known that I, FRED IjI. LovELEss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bulletin and Sign Boards, of which the following is a specification. g

This invention relates to a changeable advertising sign and daily bulletin board which is particularly adapted for rural use; and one of the objects of the invention consists in the provision of a. changeable advertising sign and daily bulletin board of the above character whereby the ground location privileges for maintaining the sign board can be paid by the allotment to the lessee of a portion of the board for his personal use in displaying to the public such commodities he may have for sale or those he wishes to buy.

A further object ofthe invention consists in the provision of a changeable sign and bulletin board of the above character wherein the board is made removable, so that at the expiration of the advertisers contract covering a definite period of time for displaying his advertising matter the board, carrying the display matter, can be easily removed and a new board substituted.

A still further object of the invention including a removable advertising display board introduces an element of economy in maintaining the boards, in that it enables the boards to be painted in the shopnor other designated point, where supervision can be maintained over the workmen and which is impossible where the workmen are sent forth to repaint the sign boards wherever they may be located, and which entails a large expense.

I accomplish the above objects of the 1nvention, and such others as may appear from a perusal of the following description and claims, by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved removable sign and daily bulletin board. Referring to the drawings, the changeable sign and bulletin board contemplates a rectangular frame comprising a pair of parallel upright side members 10, and an upper horizontal member 11 and a lower member 12. The lower member 12 and side members 10 are permanently secured together, the upper member 11 being removably attached to the side members 10 by means of the screws 13, or similar fastening devices. Each of the sign frame members 10, 11 and 127 is provided in its inner surface with aY longitudinal groove or kerf 15, and the continuous channel formed by the kerfs 15 forms a seat for receiving the sign and bulletin board 16 which ispreferably composed of thin sheet metal. The sign and bulletin board 16 is inserted and removed from the sign frame by iirst removing the upper member 11 of the sign frame. The removability of board 16 not only enables the permanent display matter on the board to be painted in the shop where proper supervision can be maintained over the work and workmen, but it also enables a large number of the boards to be transported from the shop 'and delivered to the various places where the sign frames are located, and where the newly painted boards can be exchanged for the old boards, the latter being returned to the shop.

Extending horizontally between side members 10 of the sign frame is a division rail 17 which not only separates the surface area of board 16 into two parts of which 1the area above the division rail 1-7 is allotted to the lessee for his personal use and the area below the rail 17 for the display of the permanent advertising matter, but said rail also affords a means for anchoring the central portion of board 16. The upper surface of rail 17 is provided with a longitudinal groove 19 adapted to receive vthe free ends of a plurality of hooks 20 which are cut and bent in the form of tongues from the body of board 16. As shown in Fig. 3 the upper surface of rail 17 is beveled so as to provide a channel 18 adjacent the surface of board 16, this channel forming a drainway for the water iiowing from the upper surface of the board and conveying the water', and discharging it at the .ends of the sign frame through the drain holes :21 in side members y10. A. portion of the water in channel 1S is also discharged through the openings 22 which refmain in board 16 after the formation of the hooks :20.

To prevent premature rusting of the lower end of board 16 where it enters the kerf in lower member l2 of the sign frame I provide means to prevent the accumulation of water in the kerfby discharging it through a series of vertical drain holes 24 in lower-member 12. These'holes 29: extend preferably to the top of member 12 and intersect the lerf 15 in which the lower edge of the board 1G rests. As the water drains from the surface of board 1G it immediately passes out through holes 24. Holes 2% also afford means for ventilatingl purposes in that the air currents which are deflected downwardly along the surface of board 1G will pass, or at least a portion of them, through said holes, so that the drying out process of member 12 after a rain is accelerated.

As a. convenience for the lessee, who may wish to make daily changes in the wording of the matter on his bulletin board, l provide the sign frame, usually in the under surface of member 12, with a recess or pocket 26 which acts as a repository for a number of pieces.v of ordinary crayon 28 which are retained in said pocket by means of a stopper 27. By'means of this arrange- .rnent the lessee is not charged with the responsibility of constantly carrying a piece of crayon about his person.

The sign frame is usuallysupported the desired distance above the vground by a. single post 30 to which it is attached'by a number of bolts 31. Post 30 may further conveniently be utilized for supporting'a parcel-post box 35 as shown, and this box not only becomes associated with the bulletin board in that it acts'as a. repository for those commodities which Vare' displayed on the bulletin board as being for sale but the Copies of this patent may beobtained for ve cents each, by addressing the boX is adapted to receive those commodities which the lessee desires to purchase, as are indicated upon the bulletin board.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is:

1. In an advertising sign, a removable sign and bulletin board, a sign-frame comprising a plurality of connected members of which one member is removable for thel introduction and removal of said board, and all of said members having a groove for receiving said board, a longitudinally grooved support for anchoring the central surface area of said board, and means formed out of said board for engaging the groove -in the support and det-ac iably securing the latter and board together.

2. ln an advertising sign, a removable sign and bulletin board, a sign-frame comprising a plurality of connected members of which one member is removable for the introduction and removal of the board and having laterally disposed drain holes, and a divisional-rail for anchoring the central surface arca of said board, said rail having a vrearwardly beveled upper surface ferming a water gathering channel alined with said' ldrain holes, and means formed out of the board for detachably securing the latter and rail together.

3. ln an advertising display sign, a removable sign and bulletin board, and a sign-framey comprising a plurality of longitudinally grooved connected members of which one member is removable for the introduction and removal of said board, the lower member of said frame having aseries of water drain holes intersecting the` board receiving groove therein.
