COMPOSITE HOUSE NUMERALS AND MOUNTING MEANS THEREFOR Filed May 6. 1963 W F51 Laii 41NVENTOR.
.HJALM'ER H. 1 64mm:
FIG. 5
ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,264,768 I COMPOSITE HOUSE NUMERALS AND MOUNTING MEANS THEREFOR Hjalmer H. Kalmoe, 401 /2 S. 7th St., Montevideo, Minn. Filed May 6, 1963, Ser. No. 278,325 3 Claims. (Cl. 40-124) This invention relates generally to brackets or supports for house numerals, and more particularly it relates to a house numeral support wherein the numerals are vexhibited so as to be visible from multiple directions.
An important object of the present invention is the provision of a house numeral support which provides maximum efficiency in the advertisement and notification of house numerals to visitors and passers-by.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a house numeral support which is constructed and arranged so as to display the house numerals so that they are visible from both side directions, as well as being visible from the front or a straightforward direction.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a house numeral support wherein the house vnumerals are displayed so as to be visible from a close- .up position and also to be visible from a position directly under the support.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a house numeral support designed for simplicity of construction and strength and durability for its intended use.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed specification, appended claims and attached drawings.
Refer-ring to the drawings, which illustrate the invention, and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts or elements throughout the several views:
FIG. 1 is a view in top plan of the house numeral support as secured an adjacent Wall surface;
FIG. 2 is a view in end elevation thereof;
FIG. 3 is a view in front elevation, but not showing the adjacent wall surface;
FIG. 4 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 44 of FIG. 3, but showing the adjacent wall surface upon which the house numeral support is mounted; and FIG. 5 is an enlarged view in section taken on the line 55 of FIG. 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the house numeral support disclosed herein comprises a generally rectangular back member or back plate 1, which is provided with suitable anchoring or mounting means,
The lower bracket 3 is constructed and adapted for the "ice FIG. 4. The lower bracket 3 further comprises a generally horizontal top plate 9 secured to the top wall 5 by welding or other suitable means, not shown. The top plate 9 has a downturned forward edge portion 10 spaced outwardly from the forward edge portion 8 and cooperating therewith to form an upper channel portion 11, as shown particularly in FIGS. 2-4. The lower channel portion 7 of the lower bracket 3 is adapted to hold the lower edges of the numerals 6, and the upper channel portion 11 is adapted to receive the upper edges of the numerals 6.
A particular feature of this invention resides in the construction and arrangement of the lower bracket 3 so that the upper channel portion 11 thereof is disposed laterally outwardly of the lower channel portion 7 whereby to position the numerals 6 carried thereby in an upwardly and outwardly extending condition, as shown in FIG. 4 of the drawings.
This invention further comprises an upper bracket, represented generally by the reference numeral 12, which is positioned above the lower bracket 3 and includes a pair of side sections 13, 14 which extend and converge generally laterally outwardly with respect to the back plate 1. With this arrangement the upper bracket 12 is formed to define a triangle with the back plate 1, as shown in FIG. 1 of the drawings. Each of the side sections 13, 14 of the upper bracket 12 is constructed in a form generally similar to the construction of the lower bracket 3. Accordingly, the left section 13 of the upper bracket 12 comprises a back wall 15 and an outwardly projecting top wall 16. The left section 13 of the upper bracket 12 further comprises a lower channel portion 17 defined by an upturned lower edge of the back wall 15. Further, a top plate 18 is secured adjacent the top wall 16 and an upper channel portion 19 is defined by respective depending edge portions, in a manner similar to the construction of the upper channel portion 11 of the lower bracket 3. Also, the right side section 14 of the upper bracket 12 is formed in a similar manner and comprises a back Wall 20, a top wall 21, a lower channel portion 22, a top plate 23, and an upper channel portion'24, as described above with respect to the left side section 13 and as particularly shown in the drawings. With both of the side sections 13, 14, it is important to note that the upper channel portions 19, 24 thereof are disposed laterally outwardly from the respective lower channel portions 17, 22 whereby the numerals carried by the upper bracket 12 are positioned in an upwardly and outwardly extending condition.
In accordance with this invention, the outer end portion of the right side section 14 of the upper bracket 12 defines an inturned securernent flange 25 for connection to the outer end portion of the left side section 13 by means of a pair of screws 26 or other suitable fastening means. Also, the rear end portions of the side sections 13, 14 of the upper bracket 12 are secured to the back plate 1 by means of inturned flange portions 27, 28 respectively. The flange portions 27, 28 are secured to the back plate 1 by means of screws 29, as shown particularly in FIGS. 1, 4 and 5, and the flange portions 27, 28 might also be suitably secured to the back plate 1 by welding.
It will be appreciated that the house numeral support shown and described herein will be useful for exhibiting the house numerals from both side directions, as well as from a straightforward direction, and it is also noted that the upwardly and outwardly extending arrangement of the numerals 6 is particularly useful in providing satisfactory visibility of the numerals from a position generally below the house numeral support. This invention has been thoroughly tested and found to be completely satisfactory for the accomplishment of the above objects; and
while I have shown and described above a preferred em- 1 bodiment thereof in which the .principles of the present-- invention have been incorporated, I wish it to be specifically understood that the same may be modified without departure from the scope and spirit of the appended claims.
