Description

J. DONOVAN. STREET SIGN. APPLICATION FILED JUNE5,1911.
Patented June 3, 1913 TTOHNEYS narran sfrATns PATENT*- dreien.
JAMES Donovan; or :PORT onns'r'na; Ytk.
I STREET-SIGN.
T o all 'whom it ma concern:
Be it know n t at I, JAMES DoNoVAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Chester, in the county of Westchesr and State of New York, have invented a Anew and Improved Street-Sign, of which the following is a full, clear, an ie ing drawings forming a part of this specifi-V cation, in which the same characters of reference indicate the same parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of one form of my improved street sign in position on a pole or wall; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view cf the form shown on Fig. 1, the plane of section being` indicated by the line 2 9. on Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. My invention comprises a supporting bar 1 having a down-turned end 2 which is bolted to the side of a building or other' support 3. To the under side of this bar is bolted a plate fl of suitable size and shape, this late 4 being supported in a vertical position and having a .horizontalv 'flange 5 extending laterally 'fron-1. its upper edge. This horizontal flange 5 serves to receive the bolts by means of which the plate 4 is secured to the bar 1. A similar vertical plate 6 is supported on top of the bar 1,. and this plate 6 has gf; horizontal flange 7 at its lower edge, which rests on top of the bar 1 and secures the plate 6thereto. As shown, the plates 4 and 6 will lie in planes which are perpendicular to each other, which is the relation which they should occupy when the sign is used at street corners, as every one knows.
8 is an arm or brace secured at its upper -end to the support 3, and at its lower end to Specicatiou'cf'e'tters Patent.
Application filed June E, 1911. Serial No. 631,211.
Patented June 3, 1913.
the flange 7, the bar 1, `and the flange 5 as l well, thus serving not only to anchor the lower end of the brace 8, but also to secure Y'the various. parts of the' street sign in asr sembled position.
Preferably, I form coincident s ots, indicated by 'the numeral 10', in the bar 1' andthe flange 5 of the lower plate 4, tol facilitate the adjustment of the parts when the sign is to be mounted. Y
When the bar 1 is secured to the support 3 it will hold the upper and lower plates in proper position, braced by the member 8. The plates 4 and 6 will of course beiso-lo cated as to extend parallel te the streets lthe names of which they bear, respectively, and it will be noted that the provision of the slot in the bar `1 and the flange 5 of the lower plate 4 will give the amount of adjustment needed to enable the parts to beconveniently fitted together when they are being mounted on the support or post which carries-them. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure. by Letters Patent: i4
1. `A street sign comprising 'a horizontal barA having one end bent to adapt the same to be fastened to aA suitable support, a sign plate havin a laterally-extending flange at its upper e ge secured to the lowerside of said bar, a second sign plate having ,a laterally-extending flange along its lower edge secured to the upper side of said-bar,'said second sign plate being at an angle to Said to lbe fastened to a suitable support, a sign.
plate having a laterally-extending flange at its upper edge secured to the lower side of said bar, a second sign plate having a laterally-extending flange along its lower edge secured to the upper side ofsaid bar, said first-named sign plate, a brace, and a fastensecond'sgl plato vbeing at an anglo to Said In testimony whereof I have signed my first-named sign plate, a brace, and :L fzlsname to this spocication in thc prsence of tenin bolt passing through thelowcr ond two 'subscribing witnesses.
