' narran stares isiatas EDWARD o. MQNULTY, or Knnioee, MiNNEsofrA.
sien.
Application filed April 12', 1923.v` Serial No. 631,687.
To all whom t may concer/IL.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. MCNULTY, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Kellogg, in the county of Wabasha and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in a sign and the mounting therefor.
It is an object of the invention to provide a sign which has a most attractive appearance and which is used in rural localities for designating to those who happen to be passing the products, wares, or merchandise that may be for sale. It is an object of the invention to provide a sign of this character which is constructed to withstand any normal stress and strain, and one which closely simulates in appearance a barn with certain indicating matter thereon designating to anyone passing bv the sign the stock, goods, wares, or the like which may be offered for sale. It is a particular aim of the invention to provide a sign of this character which will attract the attention of all who pass because of its peculiar appearance and outline, as well as the construction thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown a preferred embodiment of the construction, but this disclosure is merely for the purpose of illustration, and not fm iraitation.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 represents a front elevation;
Figure 2 is a horizontal cross section on the line 2 2 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a vertical cross section on the line 3 3 of Figure 1. Figure 4 is a partial View from the inner side showing the sign board broughtin its operative position; and Figure 5 is a detail sectional view.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, the numeral 1 designates a base, which is preferably composed of concrete or the like, and which base has molded therein the upstanding supports 2. The base may be transported from place to place, but is of sufficient weight so that when a sign is placed thereon the said base will not tip.
The sign forming a part of this invention which is supported on the base is composed of a pair of side bars or frames 3, being dis posed in a vertical plane and of a. substantial width. These sides terminate short of the top of the sign, and have secured thereto at the to the roof boards 4, which overlap, and which in effect resemble shingles. The top of the sign is furthermore provided with a cupola; it being understood that the entire roof is so constructed as to fully represent a barn having a double pitch or hip roof.
Secured to the side bars 3 are a pair of spaced face boards 5 and 6, said boards beingretained in position by strips 7 and separat# ing blocks 8 interposed therebetween. The face boards are painted to harmonize with the other portions of the sign and are of an appearance strikingly similar to the appeal.- ance of a barn. These face boards receive strips that are preferably painted white, and form on the board representations of barn windows and doors 9, each window or door receiving a pane of glass or the like disposed over a white surface.
In order to indicate the particular stock that a farmer may have for sale, there is disposed on each face of the sign the representa tion of the breed of stock the farmer may specialize in and written information designating the name of the stock farm, the particular farmers name, and his address, and any other information that the farmer would desire to impart to a prospective customer.
@ne of the side bars 3 is preferably provided with aI slot 10 extending vertically therein and in line with the space between the face boards of the sign. Hinged to the side bar 3 by a hinge 11 is a swinging sign 12, which is adapted to swing into the space between the face boards when not in use and to be retained in its closed position by the keeper 13. This sign board, however, when any article or product is for sale, is swung to an outward position, as shown in Fig. 4, and'retained in this outward or elevated position by the .hook 14. rlhis sign board con tains on each face the word Notice, and be1 neath this word any suitable information can be written, such, for instance, as the price of the articles offered for sale, the age of the stock, etc. The sign board is black, being constructed similar to the usual black board, so that any matter written thereon in chalk can be removed therefrom from time to time as different articles are offered for sale.
`This permits a single sign board to be used prising a base having a socket in its nppei` portion, a detachable sign board Carried by said base, said board comprising separated vertical panels lying back to back, a sales board hingedly mounted to said sign board, said sales board being adapted to be swung into the space between said separated vertical panels to exclude the same from view, or
to be moved beyond the side edges of said panels and exposed to view, fastening means for holding said board in its exposed position, and projections Carried by said sign board to engage the socket in said base to removably support the sign in position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
