To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY METCALFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cold Spring, in the county of Putnam and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Memo-Cases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention is a novel pocket memo case, the main object being toafl'ord a cheap and simple folding case adapted to macintain a block of paper and a detached pencil,

such that on opening the case the pencil is loose and conveniently at hand for writing purposes. To the accomplishment of these and other objects and advantages, the present invention consists in the novel pocket memo case shown and described, and the novel features of combination, arrangement and structure thereof.

The article comprises a pair of stiff covers A and B, between which is a connecting section C, hinged to both A and B.

The width of the connecting section is approximately the thickness of the pencil and of the pad, so that the stiff covers A and B are separated by that amount.

A strip, preferably of metal, is embedded or attached along the length of the section C, and has its ends bent upwardly, as shown,

Preferably the sheets are bound together along the left or outer edge F, so that the sheets may be separated and removed by the right hand. It will be noticed that the pad E is not of the full width of the cover A. Therefore a longitudinal recess is left between the pad and the connecting section 0, as more clearly appears in Figs. 2 and 3. i

By the described arrangement a recess for holding. a stub or short pencil G is provided, the same being of the proper width and height and of the full length of the memo case. When closed this recess is bounded by the cover A beneath, the cover B above, the pad E at the left, the section 0 at the right, and the flanges D, D at the ends. When the book is open the pencil naturally stands in the opened recess or trough, easy of extraction and yet notlia-ble to accidentally tumble out. The pencil is easily replaced and is automatically inclosed as the memo case is shut, and without any obstructing or binding action.

What is claimed is:

l. A pocket memo case'comprising a pair of still covers, a connecting section of substantial width arranged between the two covers in such manner as to swing relatively to both when the case is opened, a pad located between the two covers whenclosed and of such width as to leave a longitudinal recess between the two covers, the connecting sec tion and the pad, and a pair of end flanges located to close the ends of such recess, whereby a loose pencil may be securely retained in the closed case but lies easily accessible when the case is opened.

2. A pocket memo case comprising a pair of stiff covers, a connecting section of substantial width arranged between the two covers in such manner as to swing relatively to both when the case is opened, a pad located between the two covers when closed, with its bound edge external and its unbound edge adjacent the connect-ingsection, but of such width as to leave a longitudinal recess between the two covers, the connecting section and the pad, and a pair of end flanges located to close the ends of such recess.
