ADA CAROLINE FURLONGER, V0F ULTIMO, NEARJ SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
BLOTTING ATTACHMENT FOR FOUNTAIN-PENS.
Application led November 21, 1916.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ADA CAROLINE FUR- LoNGnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at No. 78 Quarry street, Ultimo, near Sydney, in the State of New South Wales and Commonwealth of Australia, have invented a new and useful 1inproved Blotting Attachment for lFountain- Pens, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to an improved blotting attachment for fountain pens and like writing appliances and has been specially devised to provide readily available in conjunction with said pen and appliances means for blotting writing and so rendering such pen more particularly suitable than heretofore forI travelers, collectors, canvassers and others and for outdoor use generally.
rlhis improved blotting attachment for fountain pens comprises a springhinged pair of leaves adapted to be held when folded or closed together by a convenient catch or vfastening and when opened against a stop or stops to present a flat surface amenable to pressure. On the hinge pin of the pair of hinged leaves is affixed a pivoted spring or other clip or grip whereby the attachment is removably attached and held upon the stem of a fountain pen or other writing appliance as desired, or a gripping cap or clamp to receive the pen end may be suitably hingedto one of the leaves in any convenient manner. Each leaf has suitable and convenient devices thereon or therein for removably aiiiXing blotting paper or other like blotting material thereto.
But in order that this invention may be easily carried into effect an embodiment thereof will now be described with reference to the drawings wherein Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of same shut and open respectively and Figs. 3 and 4 corresponding cross sectional elevations while Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the hinge and Fig. 6 a section of same on plane 66 of Fig. 5. l
The bracket or jaw 8 of the spring clip 7 is riveted at 9 to the hinge pin or arbor 10 or may be integral therewith on which arbor the knuckles or bosses 11 of one leaf 15 and similar knuckles 12 of the other leaf 16 are threaded. Helical springs 13 and 14 are anchored to said arbor 10 and have thrust or free ends 17 and 18 respectively taking @epics ci this patent may be obtained for Specification of Tietters Patent.

above leaves 15 and 16. Stops or thrust lugs 19 and 2O are aHiXed to knuckles 11 and 12 to stop the respective leaves (preferably bedding in recesses). The leaves each have turn-overs or clipping edges 21 (preferably also turned back) and one has a hinged clip or keeper S22 on one edge.
The leaves are loaded with blotting` paper or the like 23 by insertion of same under the clipping edges 21 and they might cross over the two leaves and the blotter7 device is affixed on a pen say a fountain pen by inserting the stem of such pen in the spring clip 7 as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. For carriage and when out of use the clip 2:2 on leaf 16 is placed over the edge of the closed-in leaf 15 and holds the blotter inoperative and the closed leaves may be positioned as in Fig. 3. For use on the clip 22 being released the leaves or pads immediately open out wide by the action of springs 13 and 111 and rest against the stops or lugs 19 and 2O respectively and the blotting paper or the like 23 is exposed for use and may be applied to wet writing by means of the stem of the pen in clip 7.
/Vhat 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A blotting attachment for a fountain pen or like appliance comprising a clip, a bracket attached to said clip, an arbor pivot ed to said bracket, leaves having knuckles engaging said arbor, a spring on said arbor having thrust ends engaging said leaves, stops limiting the movement of said leaves, clipping edges on said leaves for securing blotting material, and a keeper for holding said leaves together, substantially as described.
2. In an attachment for fountain pens and the like, a clip adapted to be removably secured to the fountain pen body and a blot ter carried by said clip comprising a pair of pivoted leaves carrying blotting material, a spring for opening said leaves to present a flat blotting surface, and a keeper for fas tening said leaves together.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
