HAIR CURLEH Filed Jan. 30. 1939 Az'aerzzr ozmdy INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 26,1939
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to hair curlers and has for an object to provide a simplified device including essentially a tube and a spring pressed lever adapted to clamp a curl in wound condition 5 upon the tube while the curler is drying.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is light, strong and durable, which may be manufactured at minimum cost, and which will not easily get out of order.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a hair curler constructed in accordance with the invention, in applied position.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the hair curler showing the lever in full lines in re- 5 leased position and in dotted lines in operative position.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the hair curler shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, drawn to enlarged scale, taken on the line 44 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the draying in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, it designates a tube having a circular disc base I I. The tube is provided in one side with a slot l2 and the longitudinal edge 'portions of the slot are deformed to provide hinge lugs H, as best shown in Figure 4.
A lever I4 is provided with an angularly bent end I 5, best shown in Figure 2, and between the 40 lever and the bent end segmental shaped hinge ears it are provided, these ears having rounded outer edges ll.
A pivot pin i9, best shown in Figure 4, is passed through hinge ears it of the lever and through the hinge lugs l3 of the tube to hingedly mount the lever on the tube midway between the ends of the tube.
A leaf spring 20 is riveted at one end as shown at 2i to the inner surface of the tube at the end opposite the base II, as best shown in Figure 2.
The free end of the leaf spring, in one position of the lever, bears against the angular portion of the lever at the bottom of the bent end l5 thereof which portion when the lever is rocked to open position as shown by full lines in Figure 2, is offset to one side of the pivot pin l9 so that the spring holds the lever in this released position until the curler 20' may be wound upon the tube adjacent the base ll.
After the curler is wound upon the tube the I lever is rocked to the dotted line position shown in Figure 2 and an angularly deformed free end 22 of the lever engages over the curler and clamps the curler between itself, the tube, and the base.
In this position of the parts, the leaf spring 20 is 10 engaged against the rounded edges ll of the hinge lugs of the lever at a portion thereof offset from the pivot pin I9 so that the lever is yieldably held in operative position.
In Figure l the lever I4 is shown in released position to permit the curler to be wound upon the tube and also a curler is shown clamped to the tube by the lever. Also a curler is shown after the lever has been opened and the tube withdrawn from the curler after the curler has dried to permanent form.
From the above description it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be fully understood without further explanation. 25
What is claimed is:
1. A hair curler comprising a tube, a disc base on one end of the tube, the tube being provided in 4 its side opposite the base with a longitudinal slot, a lever pivoted in the tube at the inner end of the slot, said lever being of angular formation at its pivoted end, and a leaf spring secured at one end within the tube and bearing upon the angular end of the lever for yieldably holding the lever in released position at one limit of movement and in operative position at the other limit of movement to clamp a curl to said tube and against said base.
2. A hair curler comprising a tube, a disc base on one end of the tube, the tube being provided in its side at the end opposite the base with a longitudinal slot, a leverhaving an angularly directed end disposed within the tube, segmental shaped hinge ears provided with rounded edges disposed in the angle made by the lever and said end thereof, a pivot pin passed through the tube and through the ears, and a leaf spring bearing in one position of the lever upon said angular bent end to hold the lever in released position, said spring 0 in another position bearing upon said rounded edges of said ears to hold the lever in operative position to clamp a curl against said tube and against said base.
