Description

H. C. VELIE. Improvement in Combined Carpet-Stretchers, Tack Holders, and Nail-Pullers. N0. 130,774. Patented Aug. 20,1872.
Ewe/flows. {MM/3M u z a I nail-driver.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
HENRY O. VELIE, OF POUGHKEEPSI'E, NEW YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,774, dated August 20, 1872. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. VELIE, of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Carpet Stretcher, Tack Holder, Hammer, and Nail-Drawer combined; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which d rawing- Figure 1 represents a sectional side view of this invention. Fig. 2 is aplan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an implement, the body of which represents a carpet-stretcher, provided on one side with a claw or naiLdrawer, and on the other side with a hammer or On this body is mounted a springhammer, the face of which is provided with a double -fianged recess formed to retain the head of a tack in such a manner that when the implement is to be used for laying a carpet, and the carpet has been stretched to the desired point, a tack can be driven through the carpet by means of the sprin g-hammer without removing the stretcher or releasing the carpet.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the body of my implement, which is made of sheet metal, and provided on its front end with teeth a, best seen in Fig. 2, so that it serves as a carpet-stretcher. On one side of this body is secured a hammer, B, and the other side is provided with a claw, O, for the purpose of drawing nails. From the shank of the body A. rises a standard, D, which forms the bearing for the fulcrum-pin b of a lever, E, the front end of which carries a hammer, F, while its rear end, when depressed, bears on a spring, G, secured to the shank of the body A. The face of the hammer F is provided with a double-flanged recess, 0, (seeFig. 3,) so that the same is enabled to catch over the head of a tack, and to retain the same, as shown in Fig. 1. In the body A is a slotted hole, d, situated opposite to the spring-hammer F.
When the implement is used for laying a carpet I apply the stretcher A in he usual manner, and, after having brought the carpet inthe desired position, I insert a tack into the face of the spring-hammer, and, by depressing the rear end of the lever E, and releasing it suddenly, the tack is driven through the carpet into the floor without removing the stretcher; and if the tack should not be driven clear down it can be driven home by the-hammer B. The claw 0 serves to draw nails in the usual manner.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The hammer F, provided with the slot 0, in combination with the lever E, standard D, spring Gr, and carpet-stretcher A, all constructed substantially as described.
2. In combination with the above, I claim a hammer, B, and aclaw, c, the several parts operating substantially as set forth.
HENRY G. VELIE.
Witnesses F. ORoNK,
GEO. A. VELIE.
