To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, \Vnnnnn G. SLATER and JEREMIAH LAMOREAUX, both citizensof the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Newaygo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Attaching Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to certain novel improvements on machines for fastening buttons to clothing, shoes, and other articles,which improvements will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of Our de vice. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is also a side view, the reverse side to that shown in Fig. 1,with tube removed. Fig. 4 is adetail View. Fig. 5also adetail view. Figs. 6 and 7 are crosssections of the tube, the former taken on line 3 3 Fig. 2, and the latter on line av and Fig. Sis aperspective view of the tube.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the base of the main frame of the machine, and B a standard rising perpendicularly from and rigidly secured to or cast with said base, and O G are horizontal arms or guides which are rigid with said standard B. The base A is designed to be secured to a table, and the working parts of the machine to be operated by the foot of an attendant acting on a treadle.
D designates a vertical]y-reciprocating bar, which passes freely through the base A and through the arms 0 G, and is suitably connected at its lower end to the treadle above referred to.
To the end of a right-angular extension, 0 of the reciprocating barD a jaw-stock, E, is suitably pivoted, which, together with a smaller jaw-stock, 13, passes freely through and is guided by the horizontal arms 0 G. The said jaw-stocks are depressed by the attendant acting on the treadle, and they are caused to rise quickly by means of a spring, F, one arm of which is secured upon the lower arm, 0, and the other arm is attached to the staple fixed to the jaw-stock E. The peculiarity of thegripping-jaws a a on the lower ends of the said stocks will be presently described.
Thelower end of the jawstock E and its jaw I is caused to separate from the jaw E at the commencement of the ascending strokes of both jaws by means of the interposed spring I), and the jaw E is beveled on its back at b, so that at the commencement of each descending stroke of this jaw thesaid beveled surface will impinge against the point If on the arm Cand cause the jaw a to firmlygri p a button and its fastener, as indicated in the drawings. The button 0, with its fastener c, is firmly gripped between the jaws a a. until the operation of clinching the fastener to a piece of cloth or leather is effected.
Thejaw-stock E is provided near its upper end with a stud, e, which has a limited vertical movement in a recess, 6, formed in the back edge of the jaw-stock E. By this means the jawstock E is caused to rise and fall with the jaw-stock E, and thejaw a" is allowed to acto the fastener thereof, both of which arelinked together, as shown in the drawings, before they are introduced into feeding-tube, G, hereinafter described. The opposing sides of the jaws are scored out at f, to receive freely the button-heads, one at a time, and the gripping portions of thejaws are rabbeted atf'f, for the purpose of firmly gripping the neck of abutton, and also the peculiar-shaped buttonfastener, as shown in the drawings.
The feeder G for the buttons and their attach ed fasteners consists of an inclined straight tube having a guide-pin, g, extending its entire length on one side of a longitudinal slot, 9', also extending the entire length to the said tube along its bottom, and serves to keep the button-eyes and the hanging fasteners in proper position for delivery between the grippingjaws a a. This feeder Gis held in proper relation to the gripping-jaws by means of an inclined sheath, H,which is secured to the lower arm,0, as shown, from which sheath the feeder is readily removable for resupplying it with buttons and fasteners from time to time. The buttons and their fasteners are fed by their own gravity to the jaws a a, when these jaws are at the terminus of the ascending strokes.
On the rear side of the feeding-tube G is a long leafspring, J, thelower end of which terminates near the beveled discharge end of said tube, and is adapted to be pressed backward commodate itself to the neck of a button and- I by a springarm, K, fixed to the back of the gripping-jaw a. On the upper edge of the spring J are formed two small stops and releasing devices,h 71 ,which enter freely through the wall of the tube G and arrest the descent of the buttons. Vhen the empty jaws a a are suddenly thrown up-by the spring F, the arm K will strike the free end of the spring J and allow one button,with its fastener attached to it, to escape the stops h h and descend between said gripping-jaws a a. Directly below the jaws to a, and secured to the base A of the machine, is an anvil, L, having a transversely-- grooved surface, z, upon which the spurs or points of the fasteners are bent and clinched to the cloth or leather.
The device for regulating the feed or flow of buttons to the gripping-jaws may be applied on top ofthe feediug-tube, if desirable.
Having described our invention, what we claim is- 1. In a button-fiistening machine, the combinatiou,wit-h the main guide-frame, of gripping-jaws formed, as described, on verticallymovable stocks, the spring-actuated stock E, independently movable of the stock E,and also movable with it, and the means, as described, for causing thejaw a to close and grip a button and its fastener, substantially as described.
2. The combination,with the vertically-movable angular guide, as described, of the jawstock E, pivoted to this bar, the jaw-stock .E, having a limited vertical movementindependently of the stock 'E, and also vertically movable with it, the spring between the jaw-stocks, and the closingbevel on the stock E, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the main frame,
constructed as described, of the jaw-stocks rethe spring J, provided with the releasing points or stops it h, enteringthe perforations in the tube, and the arm K, secured to the j aw-stock a, the whole adapted to operate as described,and for the purpose specified.
5. In a niachinefor fastening buttons to cloth or leather, the combination of the following elements: the main guide-frame, the grippingjaws and their stocks,actuated as described, a feed-tube, a sheath. therefor, from which, the tube is removable, a device for regulating automatically the feed of'the buttons with their fasteners attached to the said gripping-jaws, and an anvil for clinching the fasteners, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
