IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR ATTACHING BUTTO NS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 173,141, dated February 8, 1876; application filed August 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. SHoREY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machine forAttaching Buttons to Clothing, Boots and Shoes,
850., of which the following is a description sufficientlyfull, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an isometrical perspective view; B

The nature and operation of my invention V will be readily obvious to all conversant with such matters from the following description:

The stock D is kept in position by means of the bolt S, which also acts as a twister, and is screwed into the bottom of the same, passing upwardly through the short arm of the body A and lower part of the socket-piece O. The bolt is drilled through its center to receive the vertical plunger H, and is provided with the shoulder m, which fits into a rabbet ted around the bolt.

A rod, P, has its upper end concaved or curved, as seen at t, and'is providedwith the head h.. Around the plunger H there is a coiled spring, a, .one end of which rests upon the upper end of the bolt S, and the other against the under side of the head h, and which acts expansively to elevate the plunger. The handle E passes through a guard, d, on the stock D, and is provided with a set-screw, G,
which acts upon the head h, and with an adj ustable stop, K, The socket (J is notched or cut out at J, one side of the notch being perpendicular, and the other inclined or curved, as seen at I. The attachment by which the button is secured to the garment is metallic, and consists of the loop 1) t, which is prepared from a piece of wire of suitable length, bent by any convenient means into a U- shaped loop.
In the use of the machine, the loop is placed in the aperture 0, with its points or ends upward, the rod P being so adjusted as to allow the points to project slightly above the bed N. The button is then inserted between the plates M and L, with its face contiguous to the bolt S, the cloth or garment to which the button is to be attached being inserted in the jaws of the machine between the plate M and bed N.
The parts being in the position described, the
jaws are now closed by pressing upon the long arm of the lever B, forcing the ends of the metallicloop up through thecloth, also through the holes in the button, and into the lower end of the aperture in the bolt S beneath the plunger H, the aperture in this portion of the bolt being flat or oval, to correspond with the shape of the plunger. The lever or handle E is then turned to the right, rotating laterally the stock D and bolt S. The bent portion of the loop being firmly held in the bed N, and the free ends orpoints projecting into the bolt S, as the bolt is revolved the ends of the loop will be twisted and interlocked, as best shown at no in Fig. 5. When the handle has nearly completed one revolution the stop K will be brought to the inclined edge I of the slot J, when, by depressing the handle, the plunger will be forced down upon the interlocked ends of the loop, and set or clinch the same. As-

The rod P should be so adjusted that when the bed N comes into contact with the lower jaw the upper end of the rod P will be flush with the upper surface of the bed N. v The slot in the end of the plate M should conform to the button used,the parts being so constructed and arranged that the button will always be automatically held in position to properly receive the points of the loop.
