Description
EDWIN IB. GRACE, 0F MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
SMOKING-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2o, 1919.
Application led April 16, 1918. Serial No. 228,894.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWIN B. GRACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at vMemphis, in the county of Shelby and State This invention relates to new and usefulv improvements in smoking pipes and the primary object of the invention is to provide a smoking pipe provided with means for draining the saliva therefrom to prevent the pipe from becoming fouled and permitting the same to be always kept clean and sanltary.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in View, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the bowl portion of a pipe,
Fig. 2 is a similar detail view of the valve arrangement, showing the valve in a different",i position from that illustrated in Fig. 1, an
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the closure secured to the bottom of the pipe.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
, The numeral 1 designates the bowl portion of the conventional type of smoking pipe provided with the usual tobacco receiving c amber 2 therein and said bowl portion is rovided with an upwardly projecting nec 3 that has connected with the outer end thereof the conventional type of stem 4. Positioned in the neck portion of the pipe is a saliva well 5 and communicating with the upper portion of the well is a smoke passage 6 that extends from said well to the bottom of the bowl 2 in which the tobacco is placed.
The lower edge of the well 5 communicates with a vertical passage through the neck portion 3 adjacent the bowl 1 and said passage has positioned therein a rotatable valve plug 7 having its upper end projecting above the edge of the portion through which it is positioned and roughened as shown at 8 so as to permit a ready rotation thereof. The lower end of the plug 7 extends through the bottom of the pipe and its lower edge lies iush with the bottom thereof.
Posltioned through the bottom `of the plug 7 is an angular outlet passage 9 which has one end through the lower end of the plug while the other portion thereof extends at right angles and is adapted to communicate at times with the outlet of the saliva well 5. The plug 7 is likewise provided with an angular diametrically extending passage 10 therethrough adjacent its upper end, sald passage being adapted at times to aline with the passage 6 through which the plug is positioned.
In operation when the plug is arranged as is clearly shown in Fi 1 of the drawings, the pipe may be smoked 1n the usual manner, and saliva and nicotine that collect therein will be caught in the well 5 and will be prevented from passing through the smoke passage 6 into the bowl of the pipe. When it is desired to drain the saliva, well 5 the plug 7 1s rotated by grasping the projecting end 8 thereof and rotatlng the same a quarterturn whereby the passage 10 is disalined in the smoke passage and the upper portion of the outlet passage 9 is brought into communication with the outlet of the saliva well 5. This permits the saliva to drain through this outlet passage from the pipe so that the pipe may be always kept clean and sanitary. This drainage is facilitated if user blows through the stem.
The pipe is provided with an additional closure for the outlet passage 9 which comprises a flat spring metal strip 11 that has one end connected with the bottom of the pipe by a screw 12 or the like, and upon the opposite end 13 thereof, is positioned a closure plug 14 on the inner side thereof that is adapted to be positioned overthe outlet passage 9 so as to absolutely prevent any leakage of the saliva from the well 5. This keeps the drain always clean, and prevents any leakage of nicotine or saliva, so 'as the pipe would be likely to soil the users hands or clothes.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specic structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A smoking pipe having a saliva well formed in the neck portion thereof and a tapered vertical bore in said neck portion communicating with the Well and the bowl of the pipe, a tapered valve rotatably mounted in said. bore formed with a Way adapted to communicate, at times, with said well and opening outwardly adjacent the lower side of said neck portion, said valve having an obliquely disposed way therethrough for establishing communication between the stem and bowl portions of the pipe bowl and the upper portion of the rotatable valve extending from a distance above the upper side of the neck portion ofthe pipe, and a spring arm carrying a plug on the free end thereof engageable in the outer end of the way formed in the valve communicating with the saliva Well. A
In testimony whereof, I aiix my signature hereto.
EDWIN B. GRACE.
