PIPE DRAIN Filed March s1 '1920 Patented May 22, 1923.
AARON HESS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y
PIPE DRAIN.
Application filed March 31, 1920. Serial No. 370,109.
This invention relates to smoke pipe4 drains, and has for an object to provide an impro-ved simple construction which will continually and automatically drain the pipe at all times.
Another object in view is to provide a drain which may! be easily inserted or removed and will not mar the appearance of the pipe when in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pipe drain which automatically collects in an efficient manner the saliva from the pipe and presents means which will present easy cleaning at any time.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side view of a. pipe with certain parts broken away and an embodiment of the invention shown applied.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the pipe and drain shown in Figure 1, part of the stem being broken away.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view through Figure 2 on line 3 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates an ordinary bowl provided with a permanent stem 2 adapted to receive the mouth-piece 3. The construction of the pipe forms no part of the present invention, as the invention is in the drain 4 arranged adjacent the bottom ofthe bowl 1. It will be noted that in the drawing the juncture of the bowl and stem 3 is shown flat at. 5.y though if desired the shape could be some other formation and the drain member formed in a proper shape to conform with the shape of the pipe. An aperture 6 is provided which extends from the exterior of thebowl to the smoke passagewayI 7, said aperture being placed at any suitable point without departing from the invention, but preferably is arranged adjacent the bowl. The drain 4 is formed with a tubular member 5 acting as a container, said tubular member having a flange 8 merging into a rear extension 9 provided with hinged knuckles 10 co-acting with the knuckle 11 of the extension 12 of cap 13. It will be noted that an annular flange 14 is` provided above flange 8 and cap 13 is provided with a depression so as to snugly fit over this annular iange. A bent end 15 is provided on cap 13 acting as a snap fastener for holding the cap normally in a closed position. It is evident that any form of fastening means could be used without departing from the spirit of the invention. but preferably some simple form is utilized, as for instance the bent extension 15.
In use; the parts are arranged as shown in the drawing and the pipe is used in the usual manner. Any saliva and any nicotine caught thereby will automatically gravitate to the lowermost point in the smoke passageway 7 and will then enter the drain 4 where it is collected. Whenever it is desired to empty the drain, catch 15 is unfastened, the cap 13 moved to the dotted position, this will permit the accumulated matter to automatically drop from the drain member 4. To -assist the cleaning of the drain member a person may blow in through the stem after placing his hand over the top of the bowl whereupon the passage of air will produce a thorough cleaning action. The cover or cap 13 is then closed and the pipe is in condition for use. It is evident that the entire drain 4 could be removed at any time easily, as the same is preferably held in place only by friction. This is very desirable as it readily permits a new drain to be supplied, or if desired a plug or other closure substituted.
One type has been illustrated in the drawing, but it is evident that the invention could be applied to any form of pipe and arranged at the lowest point of the smoke passageway.
What I claim is:
A drain for smoke pipes comprising a hollow body1 formed with a flange extending Jfrom the body, an extension projecting from Isaid flange, and an annular flange extending axially of the body, a cap pivotally connected with said extension formed with a depression adapted to tit over the second mentioned flange, and means for locking the cap in a closed position.
