M@ imi@ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD L. GAYLORD, OF BRIDGEPOBT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN HASPS FOR TRUNK-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,210, dated August G, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Trunk-Lock Hasps, invented by EDWARD L. GAYLoRD, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairlield and State ot`Connecticut.
Figure l is a detail view of the inner side of my improved hasp. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same, partly in section, through the line c' x, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved hasp for trunk-locks which shall be simple in' construction and convenient in manufacture, and so constructed as to hold the hasp out, so that, should the trunk-lid fall accidentally, the hasp cannot strike against the edge of the trunk-body and be broken, bent, or injured; and it consists in the combination of the spring and plate with the hasp and slotted hasp-plate, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the hasp-plate, which is made with an inwardly-projecting iiange around its edges, and is secured to the forward side of the trunklid by screws or nails in the ordinary manner. The forward or lower middle part ofthe hasp- `plate A is cut away to receive the hasp B, vand hasa slot formed in it parallel with and at a little distance from the inner edge of thesaid notch or cut, thus leaving a strip or bar, a', of the said hasp-plate for the hasp B to be hinged to. The upper edge ot' the hasp B is flanged, Which iiange passes through the slot of the hasp-plate A, and to it is riveted the edge of the plate C, which passes over the bar a', is bent outward along the edge of the bar af, and its edge, or lugs formed upon its edge, is riveted to the body of the hasp B. D is a bent spring placed in the space between the bar a and the hasp B, as shown in Fig. 3, and which, by its elasticity, holds the hasp B out, as shown in Fig. 2, the ends oi the said spring resting against lian ges formed upon the side edges of the hasp B, as shown in Fig. 3, to keep the spring in place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination 0i' the spring D and plate C with the bar a of the slotted hasp-plate A, and with the hasp B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
. EDWARD L. GAYLORD.
