WINDOW CONSTRUCTION.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O SGAR LEONARD BAX- run, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Construction, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to window construction and is particularly directed to a structure whereby a muntin may be rigidly and easily secured in position. With my arrangement, the window structure may be very cheaply manufactured and the parts readily assembled upon the ground in such manner as to be burglar proof and also to avoid allowing water to enter the interior of the building.

The objects of my invention will become more apparent after a detailed description of the accompanying sheet of drawings in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective shown partially in section of a window frame and muntin in their proper positions,

Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the structure shown in Fig. 1,

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective of a portion of the window frame,

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective of the loose muntin half used by me, and,

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective of the fixed muntin half with the reinforcement member shown in position.

In these drawings, the window frame is designated by the reference numeral 1 and is shown as integrally carrying the fixed stop 2. Opposite the fixed stop, there is located the loose stop 3 which is usually placed on the inside of the building. The fixed stop is also provided with an upstanding lip 41, which is pierced and threaded as shown at 5 for a purpose to be presently described. This lip is preferably struck out of the metal forming the stop itself and serves as the means for holding the muntin in position. The fixed muntin half is designated by the reference numeral 6, it being understood that this half may be of any preferred shape and be provided with inturned edges 7 projecting toward each other, but also spaced from each other a distance suiflcient to permit the passage therethrough of the rib 8 of the reinforcement member 9. fit the inside of the sides of the fixed half of the muntin and are so shaped at their lower ends as shown at 11, to wedge the lip Abetween them and the fixed muntin half.

I preferably make the parts of a size so that the reinforcement member will wedge into the position shown, whereby it is temporarily held in such position. In fact, this frictional engagement or wedging of the parts in this position may, if desired, be relied on to permanently hold the fixed muntin in position if this is desired. The loose muntin half is designated by the reference numeral 12 and is also provided with inwardly projecting edge portions 13 spaced slightly from each other to permit the entrance of the rib 8, as shown. it is through the loose muntin half that the fastening screw 14 passes, this screw also passing through the reinforcing member 9 and being ultimately threaded into the threaded opening 5 of the struck-out lip 4:. By this arrangement, the reinforcement member is permanently and rigidly held in position and likewise shifting or moving of the muntin itself is impossible.

From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that I have provided a structure wherein the muntin may be rigidly and easily secured in position. This is accomplished by cutting out the lower portion of the inturned legs 7 of the fixed muntin half 6, as is shown at 5, whereby this fixed muntin may be readily passed over the lip 41. The reinforcement member is then jammed into position and because of this wedging or frictional hold, will remain in such position. This is primarily intended for the convenience of the workmen assembling the job. After that, the loose muntin half may be placed in position and the screws 14 ap plied.

What I claim, is:

1. The combination with a window frame provided with an upwardly projecting lip, of a fixed muntin half out out at its lower inside portion to pass over said lip, a loose muntin half, a reinforcement memb er fittin within said fixed muntin half provided with a rib projecting beyond said fixed half toward said loose half, said member being of a size to cause said lip to snugly fit between said member and said fixed muntin half, and a screw passing through said loose muntin half, through said member, and into said lip.

2.
