JAMES H. HUMPHRIES, OF SPRUCE PINE, ALABAMA.
WINDOW-SASH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 10, 1914.
Application filed an. 10, 1914. Serial No. 844,270.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES'H. HUMPHRIES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spruce Pine, in the county of Franklin and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in window sashes and especially with reference to the provision of removable mullions having grooves to receive the edges of the panes, so as to enable the panes to be secured in place without the use of putty, and further with reference to the means for securing the mullions in place, the object of the invention being to provide an improved sash of this character which is cheap and simple in construction, and which enables panes to be readily replaced when broken.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure l is an elevation partly in section of a window sash provided with removable mullions and constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line Z2b of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation, showing the nut which engages the securing rod.
The side stiles of the sash are indicated at 1 and the top and bottom rails at 2-3, respectively. The stiles and rails -may be secured together at the ends in the usual manner or in any other suitable way, within the scope of my invention. In accordance with my invention the stiles and rails are provided on their inner sides with grooves 4: to receive the outer edges of the glass panes 5.
our panes are here shown. I would have it understood that any desired number of panes may be used according to the size and kind of window sash. The bars 2-3 are provided at points coincident with the opposing side edges of the panes with vertical cylindrical openings 6 which receive the ends of a mullion bar 7, the same corre sponding in length with the sash and being provided in opposite sides with grooves 8 in which the opposing side edges of the panes are engaged.
The horizontal mullion 9 comprises members 10 which have grooves 11 to receive the opposing end edges of the panes and have their outer ends fitted in horizontal cylindrical openings 13 in the side stiles. These mullions 10 are movable toward and from the bar 7 and have their inner ends rebated as at 14: to engage the mullion bar 7 and fit snugly against the same. The mullion members 10 are tubular and a bolt rod 15 extends therethrough and also through a central opening in the mullion bar 7. Said bolt rod has a head 16 at one end engaging the outer side of a washer 17, which is fitted in a counter-sink 18, the threaded end of said bolt rod engaging a nut 19 which is fitted in a counter-sink 20 and has a lug 21 to prevent it from turning.
By first removing the bolt rod, either partly or entirely as the case may require, the mullions or any desired number of them may be removed to enable a broken pane of glass to be taken out and a new one fitted in lace. p The mullions may be made of any suitable metal or any other suitable material. The frame in which the sash is used may be constructed in any suitable way that will permit the ready removal of the sash.
Having thus described my invention, I claim i A sash having openings, a mullion bar fitted in two of said openings and movable in the direction of its length, a second mullion at an angle to the first and comprising detachable members fitted in other openings in the sash and movable in the direction of their length toward and from the firstnamed mullion, said detachable mullion members being tubular, and a securing rod extending through said tubular mullion members and through an opening in the first-named mullion and provided at its ends with means to secure the same to the sides of the sash.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. HIMPHRIES.
