WINDOW-SCREEN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4l1'7,403, dated December 17, 1889.

Application filed February 20, 1889. Serial No. 300,539. (No model.)

T0 at whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES CHELINI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVindow-Screens; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The invention relates to Window-screens.

It has forits object to provide a screen that may be easily and conveniently attached to window frames; furthermore, to provide means whereby the screen, after having been placed in position, Will'by gravity lock itself against lateral displacement; and, finally, to produce a screen that will be simple in construction, efficient in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production.

With these objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing the screen is represented in perspective.

The figure is a perspective view of the window-screen, taken from the rear.

A designates the screen-frame, which is of the usual and well-known construction. To the inner faces of the side pieces of the said frame are secured cleats a a, which project with their edges beyond the edges of the said pieces.

To the opposite faces of the side pieces of 'the screen-frame are secured two wings B and B, respectively, the wing B having a movement in an oblique direction. This is accomplished by means of the oblique slots I) made through the wings, and which ride upon pins l), secured in the side pieces of the frame. The wing B is shown as being rigidly secured to the opposite side piece; but, if desired, it may also have an oblique movement.

It will be observed that the wings in conjunction with the cleats form longitudinal grooves C O, and when it is desired to place the screen in position in the window-frame the groove 0 is made to embrace the ordinary rib or molding shown at D, Fig. 2. The outer edge of movable wing, which has heretofore been flush with the edge of the side piece, drops downward, and, due to the oblique slots, slightly outwardly, thus automatically looking itself in position.

I am aware that window-sashes have heretofore been constructed with mortises in their side rails, into which wings are engaged to work laterally, such a construction being shown in Patent No. 256,64A, and I would have it understood that I do not claim such construction.

Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination, with a frame provided with cleats which project beyond the sides of the side pieces of said frame and rigidly secured thereto, of a fixed wing secured to said frame opposite one of said cleats and having its edge parallel with the edges of said cleat, thereby forminga guide-embracing groove, a second wing having oblique slots, and guide-pins secured to said frame and projecting through said slots, substantially as set forth.
