REFLECTING-PANEL.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,178, dated August 25, 1903.
Application filed March 30. 1898. Serial No. 675E796. N model- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK L. O. WADs- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residingat Williams Bay, in the county of \Val- 5 worth and State of Wisconsin, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements inRefleeting-Panels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to providea ready, inexpensive, and eflicient means of more fully and uniformly lighting dark rooms; and to this end my invention consists of a portable panel of the same general size and shape as the ordinary window sash or panel provided with a series of reflectors secured, as fully set forth hereinafter, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of embodying my invention.
transverse section.
The panel consists, generally speaking, of a frame, two sheet-s of glass, and a series of flexiblereflector-plates. The panel A is of a 'shape and character to suit the particular situation of its use; but for general purposes it is rectangular and adapted to be placed in position within or without the pane of a window or window-sash and having glass front and back sides B B, parallel to each other, fitted to the frame as closely as possible at the edges and preferably sealed therein, so as to exclude dust, air, and moisture from the intermediate space. The reflector-plates are total reflectors on both surfaces of polished metal. The frame supporting'the strips and the protecting-plate B B may be ofwood of the construction shown, and the ends of the plates may be secured between flanged 4o strips 7 7,
or may be turned up to form ears 8, punctured for the passage of the securing-screws which draw the ends of the strips toward the sides of the case, and thereby stretch the 5 strips taut and tend to prevent saggin 'I have found in the practical manufacture of a reflecting-panel Fig. 2 isa part ing directed as intended by the screwed to the side of the frame,
such structures that the draft upon the securing-screws often, instead of straightening the strips, bends in the sides of the frame, but that this is prevented by inserting first the pane B, which, as before stated, is fitted as closely aspossible against the sides of the WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR, BY
STATES PATENTOFFICE. f
frame and which by its lateral rigidity prevents the latter from bending inward. To
further prevent sagging where the reflectionplates are'long, they may be supported between their ends by longitudinal strips 9, which may be strips of metal or glass set edgewise to present as little surface as possible to the light, or, as shown, of 'rods, each extending through holes in the plates, with enlargements 1 0 for the latter to rest upon.
The prevention of the sagging of reflectionstrips is of greatlimportance, inasmuch as if the strips lose their alinement the light-rays are concentrated or dispersed instead of beof the structure.
By thus forming the illuminator in the form of a panel it may be sold as an article complete in itself ready for immediate application in any position desired,'and especially in place of the usual glazed sash,.for when constructed as above it serves not only the purpose of an illuminating structure, but also in place or a storm-sash, the 'usual glass being sometimes'removed.
Without limiting myself to the precise construetion shown, I claim- A reflector-panel consisting of a frame, a series of flexible reflector-strips within the frame, means for stretching the strips longitudinally and a pane B fitting within the frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
